John B. Goodenough. Such an underachieving name for a Nobel laureate!

On top of Li-ion batteries having a high energy density, they can go through many charge-discharge cycles before needing to be replaced. The nature of lithium intercalation of the LixCoO2 involves very little change in volume of the cathode, which vastly improves the mechanical longevity of the battery. But the nobel prize is great also in acknowledging work on the anode which is often overlooked compared to the cathode. Using intercalated graphite was a very clever, cheap and light way of safely using lithium with minimal sacrifice in cell potential. I'm very happy with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year. Well deserved.

It is so, so, so refreshing to hear someone not afraid to say "I don't know", instead of just guessing, or fake news-ing it. This is one of the best things you can say when your employer etc asks you a question that you don't know the answer to. It's very simple. "Sorry, I don't know, but I can try to find out for you."

In my humbly worthless opinion, this isn't done anywhere near enough in our world.

Me: I heard that guy who made lithium ion batteries won the Nobel Prize, but is he really worthy?

Inexplicable Pirate: Aye, John B. Goodenough.

The Professor: We're very excited about this Nobel Prize announcement.

Also The Professor: We don't really understand it.

i left a comment a year or two ago in a video about that year's nobel prize in chemistry complaining vast majority of the winners in modern time are awarded for their work in organic chemistry. it's like we have 2 nobel prizes for biology. it's fantastic to see inorganic chemistry gets a moment in the spotlight this year.

Best science/chemistry channel on YouTube for sure.

My five years old son loves science A LOT especially Chemistry. He loves the elements, in the past ye
rs he has become quite familiar with the elements names and many facts about them. He is addicted to Sir Poliakoff and this periodic table Channel. Every morning i have to wake him up with your video. 😃 Sir Poliakoff brights up his life each day! Thanks to Sir Poliakoff and your team who make these videos. You truly inspire many young people to love chemistry and science!

Phew, I nearly thought they had stopped making videos, instead of just making them periodically.

My former mentor was a student of John Goodenough during the discovery of the lithium ion battery at UT Austin and currently works on lithium extraction methods.

Arguably imo, the most important noble prize winner on your Playlist that's currently has such a huge impact on us.

”intercalate” hmph, learn something new every day.

Spelling bee official: ”intercalate”

Me: ”intercalate, can you use it in a sentence?”

Spelling bee official: ”no”

It's amazing that Goodenough, at age 97, is still leading a group of researchers and is excited about furthering the field. I believe he's working on electrolyte materials now, as his group not too long ago published a solid electrolyte that could be charged / discharged over 10, 000 times while still retaining a decent share of the battery's original capacity.

People doing breakthrough science in their nineties is so encouraging for people of all ages!

John B. Goodenough, congrats! I feel bad that it took so long for them to finally recognize you for your idea. He's 97 now.

I, too, ride a Super SOCO TS! It was so exciting to see the innards of the SOCO battery pack! Thank and cheers!

In the correlated version of the periodic table and ancient calendrical periodicity, the name of the ten day period which precisely aligns with Lithium is Driver.
