For more Lathing tips,

Hello, all our subscribers want information on whether or not to use stucco staples or furring Nails.
The question is, are furring nails better for stucco lathing or stucco staples. NO

You can use furring nails or modern equipment, as we have been doing for forty years.
However, when using an air-powered staple lath gun, remember that 7/8 of the leg has to be embedded into the stud.
With plywood sheathing, your best bet is to buy Inch and a Quarter Crown Staples.
The width or crown of one inch is what we use to keep up with current inspections or codes.

You want stucco under and on top of the stucco netting; similarly to Dobies for concrete, the concrete is stronger when the rebar is held off the ground a few inches.
Thus the concrete goes under and over with the rebar in the middle.
That achieves maximum strength.

Lastly, stapling or nailing the stucco netting every 6 inches into the studs is correct.

Thank you all for watching, and wishing all a great day!

I tacked up the tar paper with an actual hand-help stapler and 3/8" staples. Then followed by putting up the lathe with roofing nails. I hope the house doesn't fall down, LOL. We don't have earthquakes here in Maryland so we'll probably be okay. I put stone over the lathe and it looks good. I did it all as a week-end warrior without any experience so I'm happy with it. I do enjoy watching your videos, even though I finished my project about a year ago.

I really appreciate your channel, so many questions have been answered here! Knowing how to do something and teaching how to do something are two different trades, and you have mastered both. Thank you.

Just as an FYI. I work for a developer of multi-family housing. We had a project that had significant water intrusion issues. During the destructive testing, we found that many of the staples had penetrated the plywood and not the stud. They were all rusted. When we water tested, we watched water come right in the stud bays and drip off the end of each staple. While this same thing happens I'm sure with furring nails; when someone takes the time to nail, they can better ensure by feel that they hit a stud, and avoid what can be a significant amount of water getting in to the stud bays. Those that use staples tend to randomly staple so most of them do not hit the stud.

Hello Mr. Giordano how are, I just had to say how jolly nice all your videos are, very informative. I wish you lived here in the UK as I have some spa dash rendering to do on my house and it would be rather nice to have it done properly by you and your son. We don't have many wooden houses in England most are brick or stone . Some, like mine are brick with spa dashing ( scratch coat and top coat with spa thrown at it ) . Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to make these videos, it really is rather decent of you old chap. The wife and I watch all your videos we like your accent very much did you used to do the voice for Topcat . Anyhow " until the next time " toodle pip old chap.

Hey Kirk. In SoCal we have to add polyurethane caulking on top of staples. We also use self furring nails. That wad I guess helps a lot.

Great video on furring nails !! Do they make paper that self seals an does not tear ? Deep furred wire means a longer prong holding wire away from paper for stucco . cheers Bro TU . Peter

Thank you sir. I too didn't know until now. I love your vid's and tips. They truly help me grow a pair and try tasks that I would otherwise put off.

Btw, is that a Harbor Freight staple gun? Same color.

I was on a job once and the stucco man used bent over nails for an addition and the inspector made him installe furring nails. this was about 1990 in central California. Personally I make repairs with pre furred wire and use bent over 8d or 16 d nails. Those furring nails are slow. I was wondering why I run into staples all the time now I know.

Off topic, we now have to alternate our layers of paper when doing two ply black paper over paneling. One single layer, then change elevation of second layer. How is code over where you are at?

i'm doing a 2x4' patch where a car hit my house. when using unfurred diamond wire mesh, what is the spacing of the furring nails both horizontally and vertically to maintain a 1/4 inch spacing between mesh and 1x8 sheathing? its just a small patch so i opted for the diamond mesh and nails at home depot, since i don't have a staple gun....thanx.your vids are informative and entertaining.

Thanks as always Kirk and team! What fastener do you recommend with continuous exterior insulation? I think it will be attached with straps in-line with the studs.

I worked on 80 year old homes and have never seen a staples nails. On the newer homes I’ve seen self furring nails with wire that rusted out after 30 years lol. But my point is that I’ve never seen staples to hold on wire…
