Just Driving the 1950s Volvo PV444 (no talk) - Old Classic Car

Until last year we owned a 1950s Volvo PV444, a fine Swedish classic car first announced way back in 1944 and put into production in 1947. Using footage from 2020, this video takes a ride in this 1950s classic. No talk, no waffle, just cruising along behind the Volvo's 1400cc B4B four-cylinder engine. We've owned a number of classic Volvos over the years, including Amazons and a PV544, probably as a result of our family cars back in the 1970s being a 121 saloon followed by a 144S.
The previous "Just Driving" video was at the wheel of our '52 Ford Anglia. While it wouldn't be fair to compare the driving experiences (the latter was the cheapest new car on sale at the time in the UK, whereas the Volvo was not), it's interesting to compare just how modern the '53 Volvo feels, with its OHV engine, slick gearbox, and coil-sprung suspension, compared to the Ford which is in effect a pre-war car in all but build date.
I'll include a link to the Ford "Just Driving" video at the end of this one.

Please see the other old-car videos now on this channel:

Thanks for the ride !!! Lovely old car, always fancied a 544, not seen a Tel-U -Log for a while ( the 60s manual precursor to the trip computer...) Just occurred to me a comparison test between a PV and a Phase 1 Vanguard would be interesting !!

During the late 1950's & into the 1960's these Volvo's were a fairly common sight here in the USA, but rarely seen now. Growing up in a small town in Indiana near Indianapolis, US highway 40 ran through downtown & gave me the opportunity to see a great variety of automobiles. As US 40 was a major east west route across the USA, pre interstate 70 days that replaced it, a big variety of old & new US & Foreign cars could be seen almost daily. As a boy & as now I loved automobiles, & history, so watching passing traffic was a favorite past time; as I never knew what I might see & encounter.
The difference from the Volvo's that I remember in the 60's here in the USA, from this nice example, were the 1 piece front & rear glass, the grill, & the tail lights. There were people in the our community that drove this style of Volvo. An elderly neighbor just a few doors away drove his beige PV444 many many years, it always set outside, & road salt took it's toll on his Volvo, he eventually traded it for an almost new Plymouth Valiant.
It was good to see & go along for the ride in this vintage Volvo. Thank you for sharing, & letting us ride along on those British roads through the countryside; it has brought back many good memories of days long gone.

The Australian 1948 Holden FX model sedan had a remarkably similar body design.

I've had nothing to do with Volvos, it looks like my loss. I don't think Australia was a very big market for them. I enjoyed the ride.. thank you.. watching for the next one. Cheers 🥂

That man know how to change gears, no force, he just wait for the sync rings to do their job.
