Set a firewall on your router. Many of these external attacks can be mitigate before they can even reach your devices.

Re the discarded smart doorbell, surely changing the home wifi credentials would be a lot simpler?

You've missed one absolutely key action. Ask yourself if the risk is worth the convenience. It may be nice to be able to talk to your home, but do you really need to? People for hundreds of years have managed without that. It's significant that those who know most about communications technology are the ones least likely to have such devices in their homes.

433MHz licence free says it all. If you must have an alarm use a wired one with Central Station facilities.

Couldn’t you just unplug your router if you were in the midst of having your smartphone hacked.
