It should be explained this procedure works ONLY if the two (or more) geometric forms are created as "Strokes" - NOT a "Shaped Object". If (in this example) the square is created as a "Shaped Object" as oppose to a "Stroked form" the Direct Selection cannot select just one side of the square but rather, will select & copy the "entire" Shaped Object (all four sides). One would need to use the knife tool to cut a section from one side of the square and then using the Direct Selection tool, select the 'cut' portion, copy it and then Paste on front (basically using the method demonstrated in your tutorial.

Do not use this method, this will drive you crazy if you have a complex objects. Instead use object>intervine>make.
