I was only 7 years old in 1987 but I remember hearing these kinds of songs in the supermarket shopping with mom, driving around in the family station wagon, or on MTV. A great time and great memories.

This is a beautiful, haunting song. Neil Finn did an act of creative genius with this. The lyrics are just ambiguous enough not to make sense across an entire verse, but each phrase holds its own meaning which touches something universal in people. I heard an interview with Neil Finn talking about the lyrics and he said that even the title holds two meanings, as in "Don't Dream It's Over" vs. "Don't Dream, It's Over." Simply Inserting that one comma changes the meaning entirely.
