It works. You can even have the extra ships inside the shield of your main ship. You have to make sure that the hanger entrances of the extra ships are just outside of the main ships build area and just inside the main ship's shield area. There is a small gap in between these two zones, and that is the operating area you need.

The one main problem is that even if the main ship has an impenetrable shield mod, shield piercing weaponry will still hit the extra ships.

I tried this and it was pretty OP until my ships decided friendly fire was the only option

The short answer is yes you can utilize a battle group staging ship to carry multiple carriers, however deploying 1200 fighters into a sector will make even the most high end machine dry heave. Farming key VI for your carriers will put less strain overall as you will eliminate the need to recover pilots and have such large crew quarters.

I think the big advantage of having a carrier vs having a battleship is, that 1st it is easyer to replicate fighters than to rebuild turrets, you take your best weapon/miningturret and make a fighter out of it, than change it into a blueprint and replicate it over time, maybe in a spacialised assembly station.
2nd it is quality of live, because your carriers do all the work and aiming, if you make long distance railgun fighters you just have to stay there, they swarm out and blast everything away that comes close to 20km.

Parisite fighters were used as early as the Great War as a sort of QRF on airships. They were launched and retrieved using a "trapeze" or "skyhook." The slow speed and high winds at altitude allowed these fighters to have very low velocities relative to the mothership and be captured. Later projects like the XF-85 Goblin of the 1950s were planned to act as counter-interceptors for long range nuclear bombers, using similar means, but became obsolite with the development of SAMs and ICBMs. I presume this is where the author drew his inspiration, allthough any large vessel will carry "ship's boats, " normally serving as tenders and launches, a practice which basically dates back to boats big enough to put another boat on it. Even early age of sail vessels had such boats as their draft and lack of maneuverability precluded them from berthing at anything but a prepared and staffed quay where they could heave-to.

So... fighters are fantastic for salvaging and mining... but are they really worth it with combat? Having like 80 fighters with... say 1000 dmg apiece try to tackle ships with millions of points of shields and health seems kinda slow compared to having a couple auto-railguns with insane range...

maybe this works, what if you put the extra pods on your not yet finished ship and then build your ship largely around the pods
so that you ship shields in large part also goes go around pods?

Try attack enemies command on parasites again but make sure they don't have any turrets, only fighters

@1:95 I know stations don't undock when yyou give them a attack enemies command. So maybe build a ship with lots of "carrier" stations docked?

Why not just travel with several autonomous carriers?
