Let's forget something broken being sold as open box working, and remember that Newegg took the motherboard back, saw their OWN RMA sticker on it that literally PROVED they sold him a bad board from the get-go, AND still denied the claim. That's malicious.

I like that steve holds companies accountable, he handled it perfectly.

I think everyone showing up would have turned it into a circus. I’d agree with Burke on that. He’s a big boy. He can handle it.

I love how you mentioned 15 years ago because, in my recollection, they become part of my "do not shop there" list back in 2006. They were great in early 2000s, but 2006 was a start of their customer service nose diving.

This video along with Steve's has made me cross off Newegg. I'm actually in the market for a mobo/CPU. I've purchased from Newegg many times, but none of the products I got had issues that required an RMA. I think I got lucky. I'm not going to push my luck anymore...lol.

In Steve's case, I can buy that a damaged product can accidentally end up on sale as open box.
What I can't accept is they when the item is returned they see the damaged pins but didn't see the whopping great sticker that predates the sale to him.

In my life I've bought only one thing from Newegg, a supposedly new 4 TB internal HD. When it arrived, it was password protected. Presumably it was used and somebody rendered it useless. I got an RMA and returned it. It was refused based on damage in transit, and they refused a refund. Made me as mad as hell. I complained on the BBB, they saw it, and then finally returned most of my money. I swore never to deal with them again, and I haven't.

I had a business teacher who had a poster saying, "once is okay, twice is coincidence, 3 times is a problem."

You can apply it to a lot of situations and in the case of newegg, theres a lot more than 3.
Newegg has a problem and they can say whatever they want now because they got caught. The test will be what happens a year or two from now and how they behave then.

I also had a RMA denied for bent pins in 2012. Still got my emails from Newegg regarding it. I got emails going back to 2006 from Newegg REFUSING to RMA monitors that were clearly defective, Newegg told me to ship them back at my own cost and pay a 15-20% restocking fee. Samsung replaced (overnight delivery) them because they plain out told me that there was defective batch, and what the exact defect was and that they were sorry. Replacement of exact model worked flawlessly. Newegg told me to go pound sand.
People think this is new and because it a public Chinese owned company. NOPE, Newegg has been a POS company for a long time now.

I really like the community here on YouTube. Linus is the goofy optimist, Jay is the grounded realist, and Steve is the petty pessimist. I get every angle, and it helped me tremendously when I built my first PC.

"This shit was happening 15 years ago" - Literally the EXACT same words that came out of my mouth when this story first flared up.

I helped to set up and establish an independent computer repair shop run by a good friend and gaming buddy of mine. One of the first business accounts we had was with NewEgg. After a couple years of operation, and everything going smoothly, the issues with returns started to go south. And not like we were some major corporation or anything, but we were still easily spending 5 figures a month on their store front, and they were balking over $50 returns. Specifically with Motherboards and Videocards (before the cost and scarcity of them was ever a problem). After a year of dealing with that, spending more time talking to their customer service than our own customers, we said "fuck it", and went to a different local computer wholesaler, they were slightly more expensive, but could get product to us sooner, and never gave us any issues.
For me personally, a MAJOR turning point for NewEgg was after they defended themselves against that Shopping Cart patent troll. While that was a total "good guy" move from NewEgg, i think it financially stretched the company more than they realized it would, and it did irreparable damage to the company as a whole. Because it wasnt much longer after that, that things got REALLY bad with returns, and the overall feel of NewEgg.
And if you think this is a new thing, Just look at the browser extension called HoverHound/PCHound. That was developed by some [H]ard|OCP forum members to use the great shopping tools at NewEgg, but allow you to see pricing for places like NCIX (RIP), TigerDirect (RIP), Amazon, Microcenter, etc. And that was one of the earliest developed browser extensions i can think of, and that was done some 10 years ago, because the issues with NewEgg were numerous, and well documented LONG before then.
I hope NewEgg improves their store...but, honestly, I havent bought anything from them for a very long time, and I dont intend to start again any time soon. You dont pull the same shit for 15+ years, and then ONE DAY just decide to be better, "because". Just like an abusive significant other, some things never change.

I stopped buying from Newegg when they sent me a used O11 mini that had significant damage that they had sold as new. Threatened legal action and was allowed a refund. Moving on. The one thing I would disagree with is that Newegg made mistakes. They did not. it was systemic and it was intentional. We will see if changes to the culture and systems actually occur.

I agree that Steve and his crew are the only ones that should show up for the meet. It kept everything on track with one person handling the interview. The online community is deep and we all win or lose as a group with one channel or person's success or failure.

If Newegg has been doing so since 15 years ago just imagine how much money they have been stealing by denying the refund and denying returning the faulty mobo so they can scam another customer.

2 years ago I bought a full PC worth of parts from newegg, plus several upgrades since then. I have bought a few open box parts, I never had an issue with any parts so I have no experience with their return process. They will not get another dime from me until I KNOW they have learned how to wipe their ass after 20 stinky years. I hate giving Amazon money, I was always willing to pay a couple dollars more, wait a couple more days, but now they make Amazon look like an honest company. I HAVE returned many things to Amazon, damaged, not needed, wrong item, you name it, never had an issue. One time they told me to not bother sending the item back, and gave me the money back. Now I can go to a kiosk 10 minutes away, drop the item off with an employee, they scan the QR code for the refund, couple days later I have the money back. That meeting made it look like NewEgg knew exactly what they were doing and will only barely change enough to say they changed, will have to wait and see if it is meaningful change, enough change, but Amazon is looking a lot better these days

My husband has been a very long term (since 2001 or 2002) Newegg customer from way before I met him. He has refused to purchase from Newegg in the past several years. He bought three brand new motherboards in a row, and all of them arrived defective due to Newegg's incompetent packaging. They take a box, throw the item into the bottom, and a little packaging material on top. It doesn't have to be this way. 😒

For me, the issues with RMA were bad enough. The reason I will never shop with them again is because of how they screwed UFD Tech over on his charity stream, the donation to his chosen cause, and then tried to bribe him. That shows a lack of moral character in their leadership.

I ordered a $120 PSU from NewEgg and about 3 weeks later it came to a house about 20 miles away from me. I called the post office and they actually got it from the resident at that address. I drove all the way out to that post office and it turns out that it wasnt a PSU in the package. It was a couple of cheap forehead thermometers. They even sent me the wrong thing to the wrong address and it took forever.

I purchased a laptop from Newegg about 6 months ago. This is the first time I ever shopped at Newegg. I was advertised a "new" like, never opened, used or anything. Not refurbished, not open box, nothing. It showed up with a damaged, stained box. Fingerprints on the screen. Dust and dirt under the keyboard. I didn't even turn it on, just sent it back it photo proof and thankfully didn't have an issue getting a refund. But will never shop there again.

I use to love Newegg but they feel like they're hired the management from Fry's when they went under. They are one of the reasons why I bought a camera for my front door and why I always record myself opening boxes. Its more for charge backs.
