I just had a brilliant idea to buy a 4090 and take a picture with a piece of steel in the box to get my money back.

Newegg must be a pack of numpties to not check the returns. When i get gear returned I check it and I'm only dealing with magnetic closure gift boxes.

Newegg send this to Gigabyte for refurbishing but Gigabyte told them it's just a bunch of weights and Newegg says "good enough!" and puts it on their shelves.

I always record myself unboxing anything I buy from ebay, never expected I'd have to do it with a proper retailer though!

new egg used to be my go-to - scared to buy from them now after hearing issues with them over the years😩

I’d so call my bank and get that charge removed real fast if they locked my account after doing something like that

Mail theft is a real issue... I'm sure at least one of the drivers leaving shipping centers or delivering valuable items know what they are hauling and know what they can do.

I've heard of guys swapping Walmart TV's into the box of a brand new expensive one they are delivering, and swapping in pet food for weight in other products.

Many people have lost their job for package theft, and a lot goes undetected. I don't put Newegg on a pedestal, put I wouldn't exactly blame this on them. That could totally have been done by a carrier.

I used to buy from newegg, but after they screwed up my order. To keep it short, normally, I'd give a company a few chances, but the way they did it made me look to other options and never look back.

I bought and returned a mini pc from Newegg and it took 2 months for them to process my return because their warehouse had lost my return even though UPS said it was delivered successfully.

Something very similar happened when I ordered a 3080 from ebay. I hated that I accepted the package, which wasn't sealed and I could see what was inside - I assumed it was surely something my brother had delivered to the house. I was worried that I couldn't prove that this was the actual contents, but thankfully, I managed to return it and get a refund.

The twist is that there was a 4090 in there and they put the weights in there instead, if those weights were in there such as they are in the photo then the inside lid would have so kind of markings/holes due to the incredible weight jostling around

On a semi-related note: I tried to sell an old laptop of mine on eBay. The guy who wanted it sounded like a scam. I couldn’t message him unless I accepted the deal. Stupidly, I thought i could just cancel it but he never responded. Tried to tell eBay and they never responded. However, I did get my account charged for not forking over their portion of the sale for which I received no money. Somewhere is an old account that eBay wants $20 😂

But doesnt newegg also run kind of like amazon. Not all items are sold and shipped by newegg so could have been from a fraud company. So newegg may have had to act as a middleman to resolve this. Without more detail i dont hate on newegg for this and the guy did get a refund.

I haven't purchased parts from Newegg for at least 12-13 years. Back when I still had my own business before retiring, Newegg, TigerDirect Business, XOxide, Cyberguys, Insight, and one other that I can't immediately recall the name (the catalog always had some blonde gal on the cover), were my usual go-to suppliers. Newegg got bought and sold a few times and rapidly went downhill, TigerDirect sold out, XOxide has only a fraction of what they used to carry (they had a lot for modders) as does Cyberguys.

I used to have subscriptions to Computer Shopper, PC Magazine, Computer World, SD Times, and other tech magazines, though I think they're all no longer in print having gone online-only. Sad how the heyday of building computers in the '90s and early 2000s has turned into what it is now.

Gamers Nexus proved that the guy did not work in a machine shop, which some redit users suggested as a source of the metal. However, that was beside the point as he had posted pictures of himself in a machine shop with very similar scrap in the background; he dabbled in machining. GN also defended him by citing that they knew him. Honestly, I am not sure he was innocent or not. It is unresolved by over; I probably wouldn't throw shade at Newegg over it, though.

What's with the ridiculous prices on Newegg? I've been using that site for years and now I need a alternative.

100 percent with newegg on this. I've worked places before. It's common to have the first contact with a product be fraud (dude buys new stuff, replaces with weights, returns). It's significantly less common to have second contact with a product that's been tampered with be legitimate. Most swaps are noticed, damaged out, resolved in some way or another before it gets sent BACK out for a second customer to touch it. Absolutely my first thought is the dude did it, and it's right to lock that shit down until you get to the bottom of it, especially with 1600 dollars on the line. Also, with 1600 on the line, I'd imagine they check their returns.

Not saying it COULDN'T happen. But if i were a being man, I'd bet the dude did it every time. He's lucky the media backlash is more harmful than losing the product.

This is why you always record yourself opening the box for pc parts you bought

I stopped buying from newegg 10 years ago when they said I am the one that bent the CPU pins. I was the owner of a very good 5-star mac and PC board-level repair shop and had sourced many different parts for customer builds and repairs there for years. I hired a law firm. Newegg tried saying they didn't sell it to me, but a third party ON THEIR SITE had. But who took my money? End of story? They are filth.
