Maybe you can disolve the sponge, then create a thin layer of it and dry?

I have been researching how to make ionic conductive carbon nano tubes but have not realised a way to make in domestic environment. I think this may hold some good results but I also try to stick with generic easy available materials to build cells just like aluminium foil etc

You have to add toothpaste or ionic solution to sponge and then dry
