The first time I went to Paris I thought it would be polite to at least attempt to speak French for basic interactions like shopping and ordering food. The first store I went into and couldn't find the price of something I asked "combien?" (how much) and the clerk said IN ENGLISH "I don't speak English." Very weird and rude.
In Montreal, they just answered in French but if it required more explanation and I was struggling they would smile and say "it's ok, we can speak English, you were doing really well though. Thank you for trying"

I went to France when i was 12 and we speak Spanish so we were advised to look for older ppl if we need help and ask IN SPANISH because decades ago they taught them some Spanish in school and that they might be nicer to us if we didnt ask for help in English 😂

I went to france very recently and I had to keep speaking in spanish whenever talking. i have a decent spanish accent but whenever someone didn't know spanish and i switched to english in my very prominent american accent, their face dropped 💀 now i had to try my best to speak english in a colombian or puerto rican accent or smth (i cant do accents.)

My great grandmother was French, she refused to speak English.

The more "sophisticated" vocabulary in English are usually derived from French, used by the aristocrat to distinguish themselves from the commoners, so it is more likely that a French would understand those words.

In contrast, many "commoners" words in English would more likely be related to German, which a French or latin-based language speakers might not encounter

As an American, I really do love accents 😂 They’re so satisfying to listen to, especially Russian in my opinion, but I always feel guilty if I use my English accent in other countries when speaking their language-

étant moi-même français, j'aime bien les Américains. And yes i do like to speak english. So this is a French stereotype.

The words Austin used to describe the French guy were 💯 French origin. Of course he knew what they mean. Mais oui!!!

I hate this about the French and the Americans. I went to France 2 times and tried my hardest to speak French which was doable but they never help me in English when I run out of French when english isnt even my native language. For Americans it's different. They are often mono linguals who visit other countries and make 0 effort to learn the language and culture. They just walk up and expect everyone to speak English. I'm from the Netherlands so they can definitely do that here cause we speak good English in general but they don't even appreciate the fact that we are putting in an effort to help them in THEIR language in OUR country. Germans do this too tho when they visit the Netherlands. I work at a store where there happen to be a lot of tourists and Germans always walk up speaking German expecting me to be fluent. And ye of course I speak a little German as well but they also don't appreciate the help and effort. Sometimes even make fun of you when you make a mistake in their language
