The Getaway is a 1972 American action-crime film directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Steve McQueen as Carter "Doc" McCoy and Ali MacGraw as his wife Carol. The film is based on a novel by Jim Thompson, with the screenplay written by Walter Hill. A box office hit earning over $36 million domestically, the film was one of the most financially successful productions of Peckinpah's and McQueen's careers. It was remade in 1993 starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. ...

Soundtrack:
Peckinpah's long-time composer and collaborator Jerry Fielding was originally hired to do the musical score for The Getaway. He had previously worked with the director on Noon Wine (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Straw Dogs (1971) and Junior Bonner (1972). After the film's second preview screening, McQueen was unhappy with the music and used his clout to hire Quincy Jones to rescore the film. Jones' music had a jazzier edge and featured harmonica solos by Toots Thielemans, with Don Elliott credited for "musical voices." Peckinpah was unhappy with the decision and took out a full-page ad in Daily Variety on November 17, 1972 including a letter he had written to Fielding thanking him for his work. Fielding would work with Peckinpah on two additional films, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) and The Killer Elite (1975) (1)

Song: "Love Theme from The Getaway", written by Quincy Jones, harmonica solos by Toots Thielemans.

An outstanding movie. As watchable today as it was back then.

Saw this film at the Bellair Cinema in 1972 where I worked as an usher. Four years later, I was walking along the beach with a woman I dearly loved. We plunged into the surf together, fully clothed, playing and kissing just like this. Seeing this scene and hearing this music again brings back one of my fondest memories. Thank you.

Steve McQueen is so tough and vulnerable at he same time. Love, how this movie basically is about power relations in relationships. Such a good flick.

One of the best scenes in the movie. The Getaway is not only an action movie, but is a movie about a couple trying to reestablish their relationship after he's been in prison for some time. It succeeds on both fronts.

I saw this film at the Sterling Twin Theater during its original release. I was 11 years old. This scene, and the fantastic soundtrack stayed with me. Rest in Peace Mr. Quincy Jones. A true legend...

wow! this movie really brings back a great memory of my childhood. I love this movie, and the part in this clip where they go to the park and get out, it just has a mood that was such an early 70s feel. Its so obvious at this point, this time period was the golden age of great theater cinema, with all their money and effects, they just can't do it anymore, the process has run it's course, or so it seems. Steve McQueen was the best at these roles, he didn't have to say anything, in fact sometimes he was best when he wasn't saying anything, just his presence alone and look was enough. What a great time period to be able to remember.
