Learn Japanese with Easy Japanese: Mona asks elderly in Japan about their secret of longevity. Did you know that 25% of Japanese are above 60 years of age?

GLOSSARY:
元気/genki/ adjective: energetic, vigorous,lively, healthy; noun: energy, vigour, health.

お父さん/otousan/ usually means “father,” but here, it’s used as a friendly and respective way to addressing a middle-aged and older man.

お母さん/okaaan/ usually means “mother,” but here, it’s used as a friendly and respective way to addressing a middle-aged and older woman.

昔式/based on the old way of calculating age, a new born baby is 1 years old. That is, if you’re going to be 20 years old in December 1st of 2014, you’ve been 20 years old since last year of December 1st.

満/man/ mean “full.” That is, if you are 満 20 years old, you have passed your 20th birthday and your 21st birthday hasn’t arrived yet.

One thing that is obvious here, Japanese are not afraid to discuss their age in public, and in fact it's not considered an intrusive question to ask one's age, like it may be in the West.
