From historical accounts, if a land surveyor was carrying a small vial for use in his trade, it would most likely have contained water or alcohol. These liquids were used in spirit levels to create an air bubble that helped in determining if a surface was level or plumb. Alcohol, specifically, was preferred in colder climates because it wouldn't freeze like water, ensuring functionality in various weather conditions.

Mercury was not typically used for this purpose in surveying due to its toxicity and the practicalities of handling. Instead, water or alcohol provided a safe, effective, and accessible solution for the technology of the time.

Nice find, but you don't completely understand what you've got. The glass vial is for drafting ink. The "other compasses" are drafting pen nibs.
