During this election season there have been multiple extreme weather events, which continue to intensify as the climate crisis worsens.

But paradoxically, many of the communities that are being battered by natural disasters are still choosing to back Donald Trump, a vocal climate denier. The Guardian’s Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone head to south-west Louisiana to find out why

Chapters:
00:00 – Hurricane survivors still vote for Republicans who deny climate science
01:11 – Welcome to Louisiana and a town struggling to recover
01:52 – My relatives were washed out of their graves
03:53 – The Republican Women of Southwest Louisiana
05:15 – I'm not saying climate change is not true
06:39 – A Democrat running in a deeply conservative district
08:40 – It's not just hurricanes that have damaged this community
10:38 – People here have lost faith in politics

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

The more ignorant, the easier they are to manipulate.

But everyone in the world is struggling with inflation! If only they could understand this. The cost of food has gone up in Europe too. Trump cannot solve it as we are all going through job losses due to modern technology, the effect of Covid and after effects of natural disasters etc. They need to poke their heads outside of the bible and America.

The gentleman said it: " I know nothing of politics". When sheep sleep, wolves take control. Doubt, pride, lack of motivation, lack of curiosity and self pity can collectively turn a demographic into a stale dead end. These folks need to find out who's stealing their resources and take the reins of their local and state's government. That takes some extra effort even after a hard day's work. -- and to think Trump, a wolf if there ever was one, is their savior is an incomprehensible rationale when he has no comprehension on what the disenfranchised truly suffer.

Because basic scientific literacy is nonexistent in Louisiana.

Because they are ignorant and all hope is lost. They could be smacked in the face by his incompetence and the proof he gives no s**** about them yet they'd still vote for him.

This is the concerning issue. When he looses, they'll all still insist "it was stolen".

I’m from the south but haven’t lived there since the early 1980s. I was a student of American history and the south has been running this country from the very beginning. Even something as complicated as the electoral college was instituted to protect southern rights and to diminish non-white voting rights.

Many people in the south still strongly believe that the confederacy was a good thing and they have a lot of pride about that. It seems like the same thing with January 6, this was an insurrection and yet, those people in someways are honored and called heroes.

I understand that life in the last few years have been hard for the people in this community, but that’s because of back-to-back city destroying hurricanes that are stronger and more frequent because of climate change, not Joe Biden’s policies.

Ignorant and proud of it. They are so arrogant. They think too much of themselves.

They accurately prove the Albert Einstein quote: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe!"

Trump could claim there was no such thing as hurricanes, and they would believe him, defend him, and vote for him.

And that's how America met fascism.

Jared Kushner did say that Trump had chosen to run as a Republican because he felt like those voters were less educated and easier to fool.

These people are so uneducated. They don't seem to mind being ignorant. They don't make any effort to improve their situations because they think God is in charge of everything. They are just powerless and must take whatever God dishes out!

Hence, the lack of empathy I have towards these people. Particularly the dummies that reside in red states. Here's some thoughts and prayers, though!

0:37 "But many communities who bear the brunt of these disasters continue to vote Republican, even as most leading the party deny climate science."
Turkeys continuing to vote for Thanksgiving. I used to feel bad for them, but not anymore.🤷‍♂
