Sanji falters at times, but he puts in a lot of work to protect and often leads the crew. He's specifically saved the day at Alabasta, Sea Train, and Ennis Lobby.

Oda made a massive mistake to turn his gag into an actual plot point with him dying in Fishman Island. Gags should never be turned into story beats like that.
