Battlefield 3 - 3840x2160 - 4K Testing - PC Perspective

You may have recently seen a story and video on PC Perspective about a new TV that made its way into the office. Of particular interest is the fact that the SEIKI SE50UY04 50-in TV is a 4K television; it has a native resolution of 3840x2160. For those that are unfamiliar with the new upcoming TV and display standards, 3840x2160 is exactly four times the resolution of current 1080p TVs and displays. Oh, and this TV only cost us $1300.

A single frame of a game at 1920x1080 produces 2.0 million pixels. A single frame at 3840x2160 produces 8.3 million pixels. The jump from a 1080p panel to something like the SEIKI 50-in 4K TV we got in last week greatly increases the computing power required for gaming. Users that bought a single GTX 680 or single HD 7970 will find that newer games like Crysis 3 won't breach the 25 FPS level even with image quality settings dropped of the maximum levels a bit. Even GTX Titan buyers will find that their card has a bit of a struggle to keep playable frame rates at this resolution. Gamers that want the ultimate experience on a 4K display or TV will want to own a GTX 690 or better yet, a pair of GTX Titan cards running in SLI. I guess if you are willing to invest in a 4K TV, you should be willing to invest in high performance graphics hardware as well.

4k original, hmm, I have medieval rural broadband. In practice that means I will get to see the first frame some time this year.

The thing is that the textures are looking much more blurry than on 1080p because of 4 times the resolution upscalling. Is normal.

I just upgraded to two 780s in SLI and still get around 40 FPS in Crysis 3 at 3840 x 2160 on high settings with fxaa (msaa is too demanding and does nothing in Crysis 3.) IMO the best way to play a game is with an average of 60 fps other wise your just playing a slide show. 27.5 fps would be unplayable. BTW my processor is a 3770k OCed to 4.7ghz stable. You're right never is too strong. It will take a while for the video cards to catch up to 4k where games are play with smooth frame rates.

what I ment was you need a 4k monitor to get any benefit from it

click on the quality button, then press original. Just displaying that is a struggle for my PC

My question is, each port of a graphics card produce a maxium of 2560 x 1600, so how do you reach the resolution or does the tv suport sli on multiple conections ? I were wondering how a pair of gtx 580 would cope.I'm not sure how you reach this resolution ?

you are probably seeing very low FPSs because youtube isn't yet optimized for this resolution's so it lags a lot. probably the actual FPSs where above 30.

I use down-sampling on my 46" Samsung TV (native res is 1920x1080) at 3840 x 1080 on games like Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored and it looks awesome. I have 2 gtx 680s in SLI and get over 60 fps. The problem with a 4k monitor/TV is that you are forced to use that resolution. 1920x1080 probably looks terrible on that monitor. You will never be able to run games like Crysis 3 or Far Cry 3 at 4k.

2 Radeon 7990s will definitely play 4k, 4 GTX Titans will play at at 7 to 8k with 30 to 40 fps, give or take

Your PC must really suck. YouTube has already done all the encoding. No one should have their PC struggle when watching it in original form.

Wow, that's a whole lot of screen tearing. :S
