How to make shampoo bars with fewer ingredients

Join the Makers Letters, a free weekly email series to learn how to master making your own zero waste bath & beauty products using simple and easy to source ingredients!

Make your own shampoo & conditioner bars from scratch!

Simple shampoo bar recipe using powders (makes 60 g/2.11 oz)

64% sodium cocoyl isethionate: 38.4 g/1.35 oz
18% cocamidropopyl betaine: 10.8 g/0.38 oz
9.5% oil of your choice: 5.7 g/0.20 oz
6% clay (better for oily hair) or starch: 3.6 g/0.12 oz
2% essential oils (or remove them and increase the oil amount): 1.2 g/0.04 oz

Mix all the ingredients together and press the mix until you obtain a "dough" consistency. Fill a mould by pressing well, or hand mould the bar, and let air dry or pop in the freezer.

For a milder formula, you can also decrease the SCI amount and use a combination of clays + starches. You could also mix in a little bit of powders like nettle leaf, shikakai etc.
For clays I recommend kaolin or bentonite clay, as starches you can use arrowroot powder or corn starch.

I use yucca root powder in my shampoo and let me tell you how amazing my hair homes out every wash. I watched videos that American Indians used that to wash there hair and there hair is amazing. I have watched my hair with just the powder but it's a process you take a large bowl and add hot water with 2 teaspoon of yucca powder and rinse with cold water it comes out so clean and nice but the shampoo bar with mild surfactants and yucca root powder and I also add clay and oatmeal its amazing

I’ve read that a 1% super-fat content animal-fat containing cold process soap is excellent for high lather, and the animal fats keep the product from melting in the shower. It can be used instead of detergents (surfactants). I tried lard recently in a charcoal body wash soap….the lather is ridiculous, but the charcoal powder pops the bubbles really fast. The bar is plenty hard—even though stored in the shower. The powder in the soap tends to bring the bubble factor down some, though. Have you tried these things to go more natural, and avoid surfactants altogether, yet?

Best video on teaching shampoo bars, straight to the point, thank you so much for making things simple and sharing what you know with all of us. I am watching this in abril 2024 from Brazil, and it is the best video I have watched on shampoo bars!
