PAPI stands for Precision Approach Path Indicator. A PAPI system has 4 lights angled differently to emit light beams with the upper segment being white, and the lower segment being red. It is usually installed on the side of an airport runway threshold. They are a great visual reference for flying a stable final approach. The more red lights you see, the lower you are on the glide path; The more white lights you see, the higher you are on the glide path. 2 white lights and 2 red lights mean that you are on the glide slope which is typically 3 degrees. A PAPI system uses lights similar to the VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator) system except they are installed as four lights in a single row, normally on the left side of the runway. “Red over white you’re gonna be right, Red over red you’re gonna be dead.” This ensures that the pilot has a positive visual indication of the aircraft’s position relative to the optimal glide slope during the final approach to the runway. Now you know what PAPI lights are, try to spot them the next time
you line up with the runway!
