Sometimes I come back to this when I'm sad just to appreciate how great things can be

In Steve Yzerman’s own words: “Mac did that move all year long and it never worked and he turned it over all the time. I said Mac, would you not do that because we're not going to get on the ice if we get scored on. Sure enough, I'm right behind him and here he goes again. He does that move and it works and he scores. Mac never listened to anybody. It was a fantastic goal.”

Just to put this in perspective for the young folks out there....This is the equivalent of watching Ryan Reaves or a Chris Thorburn pulling this off...What made it sweeter was that Darren was a Burnaby, Canada native but grew up a Red Wings fan, he was homer in every sense of the word. The only way you were getting on this Detroit squad was either being a star player, or being a tough guy willing to sacrifice points and scoring for the team. Darren McCarty is to this day one of my favorite players on this team and he will always be, because he was a good hockey player but a lot of times we didn't get to see it because of the style he played and he wanted to bring the Cup to the one place he truly loved playing. I still get chills watching this goal every time I see it.

The "Hit me" gets me every single time. He called for it, got it, and made the most of his 1 on 1. Just a great goal.

Me and two buddies that played lots of pickup hockey together back when we were in college also watched a ton of ESPN hockey/NHL2Night in those days. 2 of us were big Wings fans and one of us was a an Avs fan, so it was a good rivalry. I remember we were all at our buddy's girlfriend's apartment(the Av's buddy) watching the game. My 2 other buddies were both smokers and had stepped out onto the lanai to smoke when this goal happened. It's still clear as day in my memory and it was 25 years ago. I remember I yelled "holy shit!" and cheered. And they came rushing back in and asked "what happened?!". I remember I just said "McCarty just abused Ninimaa like a red headed step child...". Me and my Wings buddy were stoked, but our Avs buddy had been rooting against Detroit since they eliminated their rival and his team, the Avs, so he was pretty sour as he knew that was the final nail in the coffin of the series.

He might not be a hall of fame player, but McCarty will always be loved as a hockeytown legend

I still remember watching this live when I was 12. The energy around that team as a fan in and around Detroit was on another level leading up to that 1997 Stanley Cup.

What a season for McCarty. Clobbers Lemieux and scores OT winner in that infamous game, ends regular season with a career high 19 goals/49 pts. and 14 +/- in 68 games. Then in playoffs scores a game winner against St. Louis, a goal against Colorado, and this beauty that was the gamer winner for their 4th win in the Stanley Cup Finals.
