Oakland Airport ordered to STOP using 'San Francisco' in name

San Francisco has won the battle over the renaming of the Oakland International Airport, at least for now.

A federal judge granted San Francisco's motion for a preliminary injunction against Oakland.

This means the Port of Oakland, which controls the airport, to immediately stop using the name "San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport."

Court documents show the judge determined San Francisco will suffer irreparable harm from Oakland's name change made back in May in hopes of attracting more business, and that Oakland violated San Francisco's trademark for SFO.

The decision means Oakland cannot use "San Francisco Bay" in any promotions or products either.

I've heard since they can't use the SF name anymore, the airport is considering relocating to Las Vegas 😉😎🤣

Just call it Oakland International Airport and be done with it.

I was born in Oakland and grew up in the Bay Area and proud of it. I wish instead of changing the name that Oakland would instead revitalize the reputation; because the citizens of Oakland deserve it. It is hard but NEVER impossible and everyone that grew up in the East Bay needs to embody that pride so the leadership will push change forward. ❤

San Francisco International aka SFO has spent $$$ advertising their trademarked name. Not surprised at the Federal judge ruling.

For those who are not from the Bay Area, calling the Oakland Airport the San Francisco Bay Oakland Airport, simply makes for confusion, people thinking San Francisco is close by, when it isn't. Though BART goes directly to San Francisco, it is still a 15-minute journey to San Francisco. Even American Citizens get confused and go in the wrong direction, imagine foreigners trying to figure it out.

Great! Using SF in Oakland’s name is foolish.

Living in the South Bay near San Jose, I prefer SJC. OAK is my preferred second choice.

It’s somewhat pathetic and a sad statement on the city of Oakland and its appeal. They’re basically saying that Oakland cannot stand on its own, it has to pilfer some of SF’s shine.

sorry Oakland, your airport is still the Oakland International Airport and one that most people associate with high crime in your city of Oakland and thus a place to avoid.

Oakland trying to drum up business on someone else's name is ridiculous. Oakland already has a name, stick with it.

This has to be one of the dumbest business name changes ever. Right up there with Netflix changing the DVD service to Qwikster and Comcast to Xfinity. Nice job Port Authority....

Boohoo Oakland is upset that it can't use the signs that it already bought, because after threatening a lawsuit from SF and their response is "well SFO isn't even in San Francisco" and they thought that was the slam dunk to the case, it shows why Oakland is the way it is. Leadership trying to revitalize by erasing the thought that it's still Oakland. Honestly if they called it Oakland International Airport of the San Francisco Bay I don't think there would be as much push back on it, but the fact they lead with "San Francisco Bay" in the name it's pretty obvious what they're doing.

I get the problem but being from Europe I'm used to it. Sometimes it's official, like in London where there are six airports called London XXX some are 40 mi away from the city center and definitely no in London. In Paris the Aéroport de Beauvais-Tillé, which is about 60 mi away changed it's name unofficially to Paris Beauvais, which is usually due to the low cost carrier Ryanair that uses small airport "near" a big city for very cheap flights. In this case the airport is called like that on their official publications but Ryanair does this with many other airports, like Hahn Airport that they call on their website Frankfurt Hahn airport (not official name) whhicg is abut 80 mi from Frankfurt or the Girona and Reus airports - both are about 60 mi (north and south) from Barcelona.
You get used to it and check the exact location and connections to decide if the low price of the flight is worth it.

I work as a Rideshare Driver, and I once had a group of passengers going to what I thought was, San Francisco International Airport (SFO). But in actuality, it was _San Francisco _*_Bay Oakland_*_ International Airport (OAK)._

On the App, it only showed the "San Francisco" & "Airport" parts in the name because the name was too long to fit in the name plate. Simply put, I prefer to *avoid* OAK because of all the gangs, break-ins & thieveries going on in Oakland itself. I had to go through with the ride because I already accepted it, and the passengers were in my car. As soon as I dropped them off, I just bolted back to San Jose. I did not want to risk looking for a ride going back to San Jose. But driving from Oakland to San Jose *without* a passenger was just a waste of time & gas. It's also money lost because I had to drive a long way without a passenger.

Had I known the ride was to OAK instead of SFO when it was offered, I would've *rejected* it. And no, the ride fare for the one-way trip was *not worth it.*

Oh, sure it may be just once and it's not much of a loss. But do it multiple times throughout the year. Not much of a loss now then, huh?

It *does* cause confusion by adding _"San Francisco"_ in the name. *_I'm so glad the Judge issued the Cease & Desist order._*

Being from the NY/NJ area, this whole concept seems so foreign to me. In my area, the airports are all under common ownership and would never compete with one another. The last name change we had was Newark International Airport changing to Newark LIBERTY International Airport after 9/11. People shrugged off the name as gratuitous and nobody uses it.

When other facilities in the area changed names - Tappan Zee Bridge, Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Triborough Bridge - nobody adopted the new name in conversation, and years later people still don’t. So in my opinion, the name change will be most unacknowledged by the public, who will still call Oakland Oakland, and will call SFO SFO. The “irreparable harm” claim seems a bit exaggerated.
