I think he was always badass. Since he freed Zoro, fought kuro, took the attacks of Don Krieg and beat him, smashed Arlong through his own House, climbed a snow mountain with an ill nami and a beat up Sanji with his bare hands and much much more. He gets himself in Peril and seeks strength for his friends. He wouldn't just give everything he has for his friends. He always does. He pulls through no matter what. He does what he wants. After 2 years he knew he needs to reach the top. Not only for his dreams alone but to protect the others alongside him. He doesn't want to be the strongest. He needs to be. On his own will. He loves them all and they love him. They are family and he is their captain. Our future Pirate King who will change the World: Monkey D. Luffy
