I wish I had some teachers like you at school - about 30 years ago! Maths would have been so much easier.... 🤨

I am glad you have mentioned BODMAS aka PEDMAS. In one math class in secondary school, one teacher taught this formula which I think I remember as; work out brackets, multiply or divide, then add or subract. As I live in Australia BODMAS is the way understand simple equations. The comment Simon JC wrote is very true. Can i also mention that recently halved a three digit number eg 000.00 without using pen and paper or a calculator. Mental calcuations should always be encouraged. Than you Josh for encouraging this skill to continue.

Thank you for your gentle and positive instruction. Also thank you for increasing volume in your audio, much easier to hear now. 🙂

Thanks Tecmath, My math is hard, Then i came searching how to solve and tapped on this video i learned! I just need to watch this over and over again because i keep forgetting

Ah, finally a video I can send people to when I see those annoying viral posts on Facebook, and people constantly getting the answer wrong - and claiming that they were never taught this stuff in school! (They WERE taught it - they were probably not listening!)

The real conclusion from this video is that you shouldn't use the division sign, and when you do make sure you use proper brackets. None of this confusion would happen with fractions.

Probably the biggest confusion when it comes to the "Order of Operations", is that people will think that addition always comes before subtraction, or multiplication always comes before division, or division always comes before multiplication.

However, think of subtraction as negative addition, and division as fractional multiplication

E.g. 5 / 3 x 12 = 5 x 1/3 x 12
5 - 3 + 12 = 5 + -3 + 12

You could waste time on order of operations or do what any good mathematician does and use brackets to indicate the order. Then there is no discussion to be had.

At 6:07, you wrote 22 as one of the possible answers, and it was actually 25 as you have explained earlier😁
Other than that, the video was very helpful and I understood it

This is what I learned in school
PEMDAS: please excuse my dope @$$ swag

06:07 - By 22 he means 25. Both wrong in this case.

I was taught it here in Canada as BEDMAS Brackets Exponents Division Multiplication Addition and Subtraction

But at 8:25 if you do division first and then multiply with 6 you will get the same answer that is 9.

*Great! Where was you all the years before during my school time?*

8÷(2 (2+2)) Is that what we have to do now to get 1

In a benevolent universe things would be kept together nicely and we'd solve the brackets fully first rather than just unpack them and scatter the contents about, it still seems wrong that the answer in the vid isnt 1. I think Tecmath has joined the dark side :-)

One little comment. Love the video, but you mentioned that if you do the 3 / 2 first in the 6 x 3 / 2 that you will get the wrong answer. It will be fine as long as you keep 3 / 2 as 1.5 and then multiply by the 6 to get 9. But that's only because the division occurs after the multiplication. If it was before the multiplication, it would mess it up. This is why I usually teach my students to just stick to the rules and don't worry about when it could work, since the rules will work every time, even when some exceptions will occasionally work.

That's a contradiction straight up regarding the term PEDMAS/BODMAS with the working sum from 7:45 According to the above said, division is next after exponents/orders not multiplication. This means it should be PEMDAS/BOMDAS. Thoughts?
