I've watched several videos, and I'm still confused.what exactly does it do? How does it work? Does it duplicate ships infinitely? Would someone already have to have a template ship? Or does it create?

Soo, what happened to these ... [ahem]... "Star Gates"? I imagine the Star Wars writers who came after kind of swept the idea under the rug, because it could undermine hyperspace travel and change the rules of the Star Wars universe, but in-lore I feel like someone should have stumbled upon one of those things eventually, or even searched for them.
