In my opinion, Avril's voice fits this song better. Although it's not as strong as Kelly Clarkson's, Lavigne's voice is very sweet and clear, which is well suited for a song like this. 'Breakaway' is a piece that defines the anxiety of trying something new, or moving out of your comfort zone. A clear tone, and hint of uncertainty is what makes Avril's original version much more pleasant to listen to in my opinion. The story enveloped with this song is more perceptible, as you can tell that Avril sang this from her heart. I do also like Clarkson's version, as it screams inspiration and strength. Both Lavigne and Clarkson did a great job on this piece, but I'll just say that I prefer Avril's version.

To be honest, I like Avril's singing in Break Away but she sings it like a lullaby, I like it but Kelly's singing has power and emotion in it. I'm just puttin' an opinion out there. I love them both, so don't get me wrong. Kelly sings with pride and power while Avril sings with emotions and motivation.

EDIT: It's my opinion. I KNOW avril wrote it, but this is just based on what I'm hearing CURRENTLY from this video.

You can't compare Avril's version to Kelly because this is just a rough DEMO (according to Avril in her interview)...It would sound much better if this version was produced all the way

I like this version more, this version is softer but more souls in there. I can feel the feeling of her when she was young writing this song. It summarized her valuable adventure at that age in order to become so successful. This song is much more emotional to me in this version. And makes me regrets that so many things missed out and didn't try in my life. People say better late than never but how could you overcome the wasted time in your golden age? Am I really couldn't breakaway from something anymore....?

For those who said that Kelly didnt sincerely sang the song like Avril because Avril was the one who wrote it...well who are we to judge. I think that Kelly interpreted it her own way of how the song connected to her.
Anyway the reason why Avril gave the song to Kelly because she mentioned that she wasn't feeling it. so Avril pick the right choice of passing it to someone who can value it more. So no hate peeps, its all good
