In this #devlog, I discuss the last 6 months of my self-employment journey creating video games as a solo #indieDev. I talk about the 7 ways I evaluated my career options, and ultimately how I made the decision to quit my day job and pursue a full-time career creating indie games.

Looks to me like you are rationalizing over an already taken emotional decision. Which I think is totally fine! Loved the comment from the friend at the end, is the journey of trying to put the stuff in the spreadsheet that really helps.

All life decisions have tradeoffs and I like this approach. I think the act of logically working through these categories is very helpful for mentally working through difficult life choices.

Look at my man going through this the smart way. I just YOLO'd the decision, using existential dread to push me to find ways to earn money and not go broke whilst being an indie dev.

Great video. I'm gonna fill out the spreadsheet myself, been thinking a lot about this lately.

Great video, Thomas. It is always great to not only ask yourself the big questions like "What do I realy want to do?" or "Is this job bringing me something other than money?", but also actually do something about that, Can't wait for the next video in the series. Well done!

Cool chart. I like the systematic approach to breaking down a hard problem with no answer.

Love how analytically you approached that! Been doing the same and got a long ways to go to prepare

I find making decisions hard. I too have found it helpful to fill out a table - I often quite like to put the "potential risks" and the "potential wins" of each option in it (less quantitive and more qualitative) - and then how to mitigate the risks and maximise the wins. But as you say, I think it's more the process of filling it out rather than the outcome that is the real benefit.

Great video. I like the idea of using the process of filling in the form to see where your priorities lie

Could you share that sheet for others to use please? EDIT: I got ahead of myself lol, thanks for sharing!

Very interesting! It could literally also apply to any big life decision just by changing the parameters

It's interesting that you put No for free time for game dev - I feel like if I was making games as my job, I would have more free time, because that free time will not be spent making games anymore haha since I'd be using my working hours for that.

Your Social Relationships column is not active... It's only taken into account in the Weight row, the top one, showing the 100% scores, not in the scores per career. So, if this column is taken into account, full time game-dev actually won in the weighted scores as well for you. :) (And with a larger margin unweighted.)

Just a note, it doesn't look like "Social Relationships" is being calculated in the sheet.

Please consider not splitting the video a next time. It was disappointing. I was considering subscribing, but now I think I should not.

Very complicated and perhaps bloated process. A job, or career, is to gain income. Therefore, the weight is even more than half of the score! Medication is taken to be easy or fun, it is taken to HEAL. Jobs are for INCOME! You are letting personal fulfillment enter enter an equation of income. If you are simply choosing between different career paths that all fulfill your financial needs, then amount of income should drop from your requirements, it's the common denominator. In NO WAY should you accept a LOWER income below your financial needs because it is offset by fun or anything else.
