Today we have a variety of methods of birth control, but in the ancient world, without modern medicine: they had to rely on other methods.

In the case of the ancient Romans and greeks, the most common choice was a herbal remedy made from a plant they called Silphium or Laserwort.

They used it as an aphrodisiac, and as a medicine, but also to prevent or terminate a pregnancy in its early stages. the silphium plant was very useful to the romans.

Silphium plant s could be a sort of ancient birth control medication and morning after pill combination.

In fact, they relied so heavily on this plant that the romans drove it silphium plants extinct.

With many of the paintings we have of ancient rome, ancient greece and ancient egypts fun its no wonder they ran out of Silphium.

Historians have some idea of how the plant looked based on historical records.

Some suggest that the love heart shape we often use to represent love today may very well have come from Silphium plants, as ancient drawings and depictions commonly show a love heart shaped fruit as part of the plant.

The very last stalk of a silphium plant is said to have been given to a roman emperor as a gift.
