In the case of the ancient Romans and greeks, the most common choice was a herbal remedy made from a plant they called Silphium or Laserwort.
They used it as an aphrodisiac, and as a medicine, but also to prevent or terminate a pregnancy in its early stages. the silphium plant was very useful to the romans.

Some suggest that the love heart shape we often use to represent love today may very well have come from Silphium plants, as ancient drawings and depictions commonly show a love heart shaped fruit as part of the plant.
