We'll be looking at a few things that were quite common in the 1990s when it came to pet care, from housing rabbits and guinea pigs together to strange contraptions made to carry your pets around in.

When my dad was young, he had 3 reptiles; a sand lizard, a wall lizard and a Chinese water dragon.
He used to house them all together and feed them bugs he found in the garden.
All he did was follow the information books he was given, they all lived to an average age.
I now have my own leopard gecko, and he is amazed at how much requirements she needs.
Shows how much pet care has changed over the years.

Oh my gosh I love this video idea! It’s so hard to believe it used to be like this (and still sadly is but a little less!).

Peak 80s and 90s pet care was if it wasn't a bird and didn't have fur made it a reptile that lived in a desert

Keeping fish in bowls is still done today. Especially with bettas. It’s so wrong on many levels. It’s like my #1 pet peeve. I hate it so much.

Bone meal for reptiles/heating rocks instead of heat lamps/taking them outside [in their tank] to let them sit in sunlight. Squirt bottles for "training" cats. Rubbing your dog's nose in their mess if they had an accident. That's all I can remember for right now. I was a teen in the 90s

WHAT A THROWBACK!
- I remember a boy in my class running around showing everyone that a baby alien had hatched from his alien in an egg and I remember seeing it come out so I spent the next few years putting mine back to back. I found out recently that they were a completely different type you could buy that you could cut the baby alien out... disturbing, but also kinda wish i'd had one of those instead.
- Also omfg my sea monkey kit came with a key chain you could put your sea monkeys in and THANKFULLY 6 year old me never did it but wow whos idea was that.

Anyone else remember the of keeping Bettas in vases with flowers in them? I cringe so much. They were all over my dad's office.
It sucks they're still sold for micro aquariums today. T.T They deserve a lot better.

I grew up in the 90s and I remember more than one of my friend’s parents getting a rabbit for Easter, then not really having a plan of what to do with it afterwards, which is crazy.

Also, many people didn't know (or they just didn't care), that rabbits and guinea pigs need to be kept at least in pairs. Many just kept one single animal in a cage that was way to tiny :(

I'm glad that my parents actually used a filter for their aquarium in the early 2000s

Furbies scared the shit out of me as a kid. Like I would just burst into tears at the sight. They still give me the creeps

Looking back at all the hermit crabs I accidentally killed as a kid because I didn't know the proper care💔 And i genuinely loved my crabs and didn't understand why'd they die so quickly

I didn't grow up in the 90s but my brother said his friends use to paint turtles shells like shells still on turtles.

Sadly where I lived in the early 2000's these '90's pet care trends were still a thing and proper research was not being done or not available. So when I was little we had goldfish after goldfish in tiny bowls with nothing but some shells at the bottom. They all died horribly and our longest living one was 4 years old which is impressive considering how terribly he was cared for. We also had a rat in a small wire cage with shavings on the bottom and literally nothing else - no hammocks or toys or hides. Somehow he miraculously lived to be 4 years old and was the sweetest guy. We were also in the era of getting your cats declawed at the same time they were fixed, without giving it any thought. And we also kept birds in the tiniest cages imaginable. 😥

Fortunately myself and my family know better now and do our research before getting new animals, but what's discouraging is that there are STILL people who continue these '90's trends - like the hamster care you were mentioning. I've even seen people keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together - STILL!! There's no excuse for it anymore because we know better now and Google is always a click away.

It's not just how small bowls are, and the lack of cleanliness and temperature control, that's abusive. Even if you get the new 10 gallon bowl shaped tanks, the round glass shape means the fish has no enrichment from looking out into the outside world like we do looking into the tank. Sadly learned that after my betta fish started seriously pouting when I "upgraded" to a bigger column style tank.
