What is a Psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists are board-certified and licensed medical practitioners who specialize in treating mental health disorders. Psychiatry is a medical specialty that treats mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders and prevents them from happening.
A variety of psychological disorders are treated, including anxiety, depression, personality disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, and addiction. Additionally, psychiatrists diagnose patients' disorders by performing laboratory tests and psychological examinations.
In addition to the use of prescription medications and psychotherapy, they also employ a variety of new treatments, such as electroconvulsive therapy, deep brain stimulations, and transcranial magnetic stimulations.
Psychiatrists can work in both clinical and hospital settings. In clinics, psychiatrists check patients' medications and provide counseling. Psychiatrists work on hospital floors with general medical patients or in psychiatric units separate from general medical units.
