What do Psychiatrists do?
Doctors of psychiatry diagnose and treat mental disorders based on symptoms and probable causes. To help make a diagnosis, blood tests can be ordered, medical histories collected, and symptoms analyzed. Psychiatrists may prescribe medications, light therapy, counseling, diet and lifestyle management, and electroshock therapy after a medical diagnosis has been made. Sometimes Psychiatrists refer patients to Psychologists for co-management. The following are some of the most common mental conditions diagnosed and treated by psychiatrists:
