Oh, the snap of that belt brings back unpleasant memories of my dad. He was very strict. I was 15 before I learned that my lifestyle was referred to as being “On Restriction” in other households. He would strap us for misbehaving or forgetting to do a chore. Of course, after my mother left, all the chores fell to the 12-year-old girl (me). Making everyone’s bed in the morning. Washing dishes after dinner every night, and washing my brother’s gym clothes daily when he came home. On weekends, I had to sweep and mop floors, vacuum the carpet, clean kitchen and both bathrooms, clean the glass tables, dust the house, wash everyone’s laundry, and keep the house picked up. All of this was required and I had to stay on the honor role, work
at a doctor’s office part-time after school, and walk a couple of miles home during the week. My 16-year-old brother only had to play sports and mow the lawn once a week, but, if he failed to mow the lawn, he wasn’t punished as I was supposed to pick up the slack or get hit then too. Left home at 17, finished high school and put myself through college. Never had kids because I was afraid I’d be a bad parent.

I did the same thing with my three sons. When they were old enough to work, even part-time, they each contributed something. Whether it was needed or not, contributing taught them several lessons which helped them once they started living on their own. They learned the value of handling money and paying their own bills responsibly.

Do this at your own risk parents. We had one parent who charged us rent the moment we graduated high school. We all went on to get masters degrees and one of us a PhD and we lived at home until we finished our degrees. Dad demanded rent and my mom was against in (this was in the 90’s). Both came down with dementia and let me tell ya- we are ALL there for our mom and she does not live in care but with me because she sacrificed everything to let her kids pull themselves into a higher financial bracket. She has family around her daily and eats meals with us and lives in my spare room. Dad got put in a home pretty early on and he doesn’t get near the time with his kids now than my mom does. He doesn’t have family surroundings and lives in memory care with strangers taking care of him. You get, in the end, what you put into your kids. Mom’s getting the world and dad is getting forgotten. He really should have sacrificed more like our mom did for us. But when I was studying like the dickens to get into med school I really would have been less stressed and gotten better grades had he allowed the rent to slip especially during exam times. I bet he regrets it now. Our mother is our queen.

My dad whistles loudly when 6 o'clock strikes. Everybody must be home then. If not rattan is ready. It's descipline. We love our dad and mom. We are blessed they are still around. Dad 79 and mom 77 ❤❤❤
