I honestly HATE that they do that. I travel alone for fun and its exHAUSting when they give you the pity eyes and treat you like you're frail. Like dude. I enjoy it. I do not have to do anything I don't want to do, just treat me like the fabulous rich aunty type that I am and be done with it!

Here's a lovely story, I own a restaurant here in New Zealand. Fully booked and a woman from America came in for a meal, I asked a local, sitting by himself if minded sharing. Went to their wedding six months later!

I used to wait tables and I made it a point to never do this to people after hearing all these kinds of stories. It’s like people feel like they have to treat people eating alone different somehow and it always makes things worse.
Even when I was training hosts or other servers I always made it a point to tell them “never say ‘only 1?’ When someone comes in alone”
Because somehow if I didn’t, common sense would fail them 😂

Knowing the Brits that I've travelled with, Jack may have understated his ability to drink for only 5.

I really like eating out on my own at times. I fail to understand how anyone could think it's their business whether I eat alone or in company.

I've had it done to me. Not to mention I've been repeatedly questioned if I was actually alone. As if it was impossible or wrong somehow smh. I live in the US .

My daughter told me this the other day. She is studying French and English at the university of Leuven (Belgium) and she has a American 'tandempartner' who tries to learn Dutch, and he said that he couldn't understand that she would eat alone in a restaurant, because that would make her pittyfull. She couldn't understand that. In Belgium that's not a thing. In the US it apparently is.

Tip when eating alone at a fancy restaurant : make it seems like you're examining everything or taking note after each dish, the staff may think you're a Michelin inspector and will treat you like a king.
Never tested it myself but a 1 star chef really said in a interview that they're mindful of people eating alone for that reason !

I saw Jack do a set at the Improv in LA and he told this exact joke. I was surprised to see the star of a new Disney movie playing in such a small room (especially since I’ve seen his specials in giant theaters) but it was great.

God, I love Jack Whitehall. I want to see him in more American movies. He was my favorite character in Jungle Cruise!

I often eat alone, and I totally agree cafés and restaurants make you feel awful, and I tend to eat and get out as quickly as possible

I’ve dined alone numerous times for a myriad of reasons. If any restaurant staff ever treated me poorly because of it, I would have put on my best “Karen-hat” and gone to town, then left. Fortunately, I was never mistreated.

Even married with kids I have been known to dine alone at the end of a long week. Unwind, ponder the past week and coming weekend and week, while enjoying a quiet meal. “Me time” is very important.

Too funny! I had just arrived in New York City and ask the concierge if there was a really good seafood restaurant within walking distance, he recommended the Manhatten Ocean Club, so off I went and upon arrival there was almost no one there, but I still had to let them know I was interested in a table for one. Well, the restaurant began to fill up (it was a large restaurant with two floors), and they weren't seating me, so I went more than once back up to the same person asking why am I still having to wait, and he said we are waiting for the rest of you're party to arrive, I reiterated, it is just me a party of one. The entire restaurant is full now, it's been 2 and a half hours, and I'm hopping mad because it's too late to go anywhere else, I said I want to speak to the manager, he apologizes and thinks buying me a drink made it all better...NOT! So that's my story, lol.

I’ve just shown this to my youngest and he said Jack should give the restaurant a one star review! 😂

I swear in the US they make it seem like such a weird thing to do things by yourself, like going out to eat or do activities but when I've been in Japan and Korea there were plenty of places to eat by yourself and it was normal. In the UK too it felt fine. In the US you feel the eyes on you like you're being judged, that it's weird or creepy or sad that you're alone. Like I'm sorry I can't always wait for my friends and family to be free when there's things I want to do or if I want to eat out lol

Wait... Is this a thing? Like... I'm eating alone because I'm hungry and I want something nicer? I never knew this was a thing that troubled people anywhere in the world until I saw it on Friends and I was like "oh yeah, it's probably one of those sitcom situations that aren't real in real life" and now I see this. What?
