A hypersonic missile is anything that travels above the speed of sound. Technically, ICBMs are hypersonic since the travel at about Mach 19, but hypersonic missiles are special because they can move very fast but can also turn to navigate or avoid threats like a cruise missile.

This makes them very difficult to shoot down, but they are so expensive that they can only be used on very important targets.

If you assume a ship’s radar height is 24 meters, then the horizon is 17.5 kilometers away.

This means that a missile would take roughly 10 seconds to reach a ship.

Additionally, hypersonic cruise missiles can't sea skim. They fly at around 20-40km altitude so as not to burn up. Then they dive for their terminal trajectory.

Hypersonic missiles are so expensive *at the moment * that it's probably more effective to just overwhelm enemy air defense with cheaper but more numerous cruise missiles than launch a Hypersonic one, in the majority of situations.

Technically Hypersonic actually means something travelling fast enough to alter the chemistry of the air around it - which happens to occur at about Mach 5. One other point around hypersonic missiles is that even if you "shoot it down" it's carrying so much kinetic energy that it's very difficult to stop - just as a rifle bullet does alot of damage wihtout a warhead being hit by something like a telegraph pole doing mach 5+ is going to hurt...
