I mean the actual truth is that large parcels of land in the UK are actually still owned by the Crown, which charges rents to the occupants just like any other landlord would. However, ever since King George III (I think), the Crown (in the form of the reigning monarch at the time) has foregone directly collecting and enjoying the revenues of these enormous rents and has instead directed them to HM Treasury and the Exchequer in exchange for a fixed grant from the Government in the form of a civil list and what we would refer to as a salary. And make no mistake, these rents massively outpace the cost of funding the Civil List, so the treasury and therefore the government more generally makes an absolute killing off of this deal. However, the reigning monarch could, at any time, revoke this agreement and take direct control of the revenues of these vast land holdings, meaning taxes would actually go up rather than down.
