I think Indonesia is great because of the diversity. Bali is Hindu-majority, then if you head east to Lombok it’s Muslim-majority, and if you go further east to Flores it’s Catholic-majority.

Bali and Lombok each has its own charm. Bali might be touristic but it is also steep in culture and tradition, while most people in Lombok are just like the rest of us third-world residents who are preoccupied with making a living and survive the day-to-day struggle. If you find Bali a bit too stifling you can jump over to Lombok to wind down, and when you’re in need of all the touristic trappings then you just jump back to Bali. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it, too 😊

For nature, beaches and beauty, Lombok is better than Bali.
The "problem" of Lombok are the locals (obviously for foreigners); compared to Bali, people are less friendly, less open minded and often grumpy.
Foreigners would not live so safe in Lombok outside of the tourist areas (Kuta, Sengigi, etc etc).
In Lombok you will not meet smiling people at traffic lights asking you "where are you from", you will not meet friendly people in any far village of ​​the island, you will not be surrounded by an atmosphere of tolerance.
Unlike Bali, I still feel that security in Lombok is not very safe. In Bali I can leave my motorbike and the key without fear of losing it, but in Lombok don't try it or it will get lost.
Lombok is for a short vacation, Bali is forever.

I have been to both Lombok and Bali and it does go down to preferences. Personally I do much prefer Lombok than Bali as it is much more suitable holiday destination for me

I had once to Bali and never to Lombok, but lots saw Lombok many times by video and i think Lombok more nice beach.. White sand and quite also more natural, but Bali had a beautiful tradisional building so many temple, amazing tradition and art, so both same good for me
