This is a relatively easy fix for a knurling tool slipping on the compound.

I like that design of knurling tool. Great modification. Santa was good to me too but I think he loves Clough42 best.

I have absolutely no need for one of these knurling tools but I am on my way to buy one right now.

Hi Winky. I'm glad to have found you! Well, YouTube did that for me I guess. I like these 'scissor' knurling tools, so much less load on the lathe itself. Excellent modification. BobUK.

I once knurled a 4 inch diameter piece of O-1 while making a bench block. I found so much pressure on the cross slide that it forced it back away from the work. I resolved the problem by taking the cross slide all the way out the end of travel and using the compound ( set at 0 degrees) to adjust the depth of the tool. Knurling needs slowest speed and fast feed. Sometimes the simple operations present their own little problems. I agree with one of the comments posted, that you may be better suited to place the knurling tool inside the angle iron. Good job!

Talk about a simple fix with great results. I bought a set of knulring wheels months ago, but haven't yet built the tool/fixture for them . At least this gives me more food for thought

Thank you for sharing that with us. I have been tossing around ideas on making my knurling tool more rigid, and this seems to be like a great solution.

7:24 Pivot & nut conflict - put the pivot bolt through the other way so its nut is toward the headstock.
Also, mount the knurler the other side of the angle iron when knurling away from the chuck.

I learned something here. I have the same knurling tool and as you know knurling can be a pain. I have had decent luck once I learned the diameter needs to be right for the knurl size. however I think this mod will really help with all the other issues that arise. lot of pressure when knurling its a task that small machines like mine struggle with. thanks for sharing the information.

All the very best for you and your family Winky. The knurling too mod is, as usual, brilliant.

I have a Logn 10" lathe and it came with a tool post knurling tool. The wheels are just one above the other. That's how I know that is how the wheels are to spaced. I have used it and it workes OK. Use plenty of oil too. Lube helps to displace metal on the shaft.

Nice improvement Winky. I keep saying I'm going to get that style knurling tool. Biggest thing I have found in getting a good knurling job is to get the diameter of your material correct to whatever Knurling tool your using.

Looking good only thing id add if you want it to be as stiff as possible is to weld in some triangle gussets on your angle iron 👍👍👍

Nice knurl especially considering how the end of the piece was not supported.
That looks like a straight forward project that makes it easy to switch out between knurling and turning operations with the benefit of not requiring a tool post holder

Many years ago, we got a pretty standard electric drill which had a fold-away handle. A brass thumbscrew held the handle in place - to whatever angle you set it. That thumbscrew was also tight on the thread.
A drop of oil made all the difference :)

Nice work on the modification. Looks like it worked great.
