Japan would have been hard to conquer anyways with the rough mountains and i this is during the 1800s then the japanese people already have experience with guns and fighting others through the waring states period

I know this is a joke video but just wanted to mention a few things in case people take it seriously. Wanted to add some stuff as a History major at a grad school.

UK did attempt to colonize and so did many other European powers like Portugal. Or at least was interested in their resources. However, Japan had a fairly centralized government and a structured society, which resembled Western society, hence they were registered as more “civilized”. With that, the Portuguese who was enslaving the Japanese people at first stopped doing it because it didn’t sit right with their “Christian” virtue. This is around 16th Century, when British wasn’t even a navy power yet and this is also when Japan started their own production of Guns they’ve learned from the Portuguese. Soon, Japanese guns became quite sophisticated and some argue there were better than European ones. At one point, Japan had more guns than the whole of Europe combined.

Most importantly, what Japan was offering was porcelain, intricate art with gold and silk, tea etc… which required trained craftsman. So unlike normal colonialism that use the land for growing crops and their people as labor, Japan was seen more of a place to trade (with the natives) and despite racism, still wise respected as “humans).

So when the British came to Japan, although Japan was still feudal and traditional, it didn’t look “easy” to colonize like other areas of the world. In fact, some historians argue they would’ve really struggled with the existence of samurai and for its geological and geographical features.

Soon, Japan sees all of Asia is colonized by Europeans and they will “self-Westernize” themselves. Winning the war against Russia. So at this point, for the British, it’s better to have an alliance with Japan than to fight them, at least it’s impossible to colonize Japan now. Japan had better war ships around this time, which interesting was manufactured in England but with Japanese engineers designing them.

Japan wasn't colonized because they were already trading with Europe and had an army that could defend against any invasion. They had ships and bought guns and artillery from the west and hence wasn't going to be a pushover like China, India or Africa.

Actually, Japanese government saw China falling into European hands, they developed 2 policies. During negotiations, never offer Japanese lands to the Europeans. Hokkaido actually came up as an idea to offer on numerous occasions, but that's the slippery slope to getting colonized.
2nd was to modernize military and start colonizing. It was a cut throat world back then. Either start colonizing or be colonized. Japan chose the first.
And good thing they did, cuz pretty much all countries colonized by white christians are in poverty today.

Maybe British empire had other priorities, but once Japan won the Sino-Japanese war, the window of opportunities to colonize Japan has officially closed

It’s funny how he makes it seem like Britain could’ve conquered Japan if they wanted to

In the first place, it was impossible to physically colonize Japan at that time. Therefore, the West turned to impose unequal treaties on Japan. This later triggered nationalism against the West in Japan.
