Like most British people my age, I have loved my fellow Scot Alastair Sim since I was a child and saw him on TV in the St Trinian’s films, Scrooge and An Inspector Calls. He’s one of the most adorable screen personas ever. He’s superb in this film, with his briefcase suspended from his umbrella over his shoulder, his twirling round on revolving seats, peeking at the last page to see who the murderer is and getting it wrong, it’s all brilliantly eccentric and terribly funny, yet the film is not a comedy and he comes across as idiosyncratic, ferociously clever and not an idiot. Leo Genn and Trevor Howard are terrific as always, grounding the film, and one wonders why Sally Gray wasn’t a huge star, she’s gorgeous and effective - though she does get wheeled in for brain surgery in false eyelashes and full make up! Megs Jenkins was best known when I was at school for advertising Tetley’s Tea! I love how in these old movies anyone in hospital is always offered a cigarette! Great plot too, I had no idea whodunnit, it wasn’t too contrived, I’m sure this bears repeated viewing, Sidney Gilliat is better known (to me) as a writer or producer, but he pulls off this movie off with flair.

This movie is in fantastic shape. Women were beautiful
then, nothing fake about there natural beauty, men were men and not one filthy word! How refreshing.
Clothing design was fantastic not cheap looking . Stage setting were marvelous! These movies show all quality!
I was just born way to late!
People enjoyed living and each other.
This reflects the strength the British had during WWII, and that generation should alway be remembered for their strength and ability to survive as a society! Sad we no longer have this caliber of leaders any more.
This is a great mystery! I love it!
Thank you for sharing!
My second time watching this on in two months! 💞😉 I just love a good mystery!

The perfect film. Strong story, clever script, brilliant acting, direction and filming. The first film to be made entirely in Pinewood after the war. The whole film was made in the studio with the exception of the few seconds at the beginning with the postman cycling to the hospital. From a very good book by the late writer Christianna Brand. Wonderful.

Setting a murder or two in a hospital makes for high tension. The actors work well together. The background of war with doddle bugs adds to the anxiety. Sim's face can convey everything. His voice adds another dimension again. This is a great movie. Thanks.

Alastair’s quick aside “Don’t be fatuous!” is perfect. Terrific choice of words, because all of its synonyms sum up the behavior of the hospital director 🤙😉

What a gem! It's hard to imagine Alastair Sim being anything other than the consummate actor, an absolute joy to watch. But the entire cast is wonderful, . I know it is a drama but I had a smile on my face the entire time. Thanks so much!

Creepy, sinister, at times comical, thrilling and full of grabbing scenes. No sleeper moments in this movie. I’m a huge fan of Alastair Sim’s acting. His voice, the cadence of his dialogue blended with his natural ability to eat up a screen are intoxicating. I love old movies. Especially these old b&w brit films. This one is in excellent condition.

I don't like too many oldie movies from that period, but there's something special about this one. Can't put my finger on it. It's just a delight, the cinematography is excellent, performances and writing are great, and Sim is just superb.

Alistair Sim is so light and smooth in his movements, and comedic timing! First time I noticed that ... first time seeing this film. Enjoying it immensely!

My favorite "new" movie. Such a masterpiece of suspense, old English scenery (and those crazy dance customs I wish we had today), jealousy, intrigue, murder, romance, this movie has it all, mostly in a medical background in a hospital & the ponded woods and shadowy light of the moon from the main hospital to the operating area. Dark, mysterious & perfect. I've probably watched it 10 times already, and I pick up a new piece of the puzzle every time.

I am here to see Trevor Howard as a young actor. He was successful in scaring me, being shocked in some of his roles as such sadistic cold hearted plotter of plans. AND to get acquainted with Alastair Sim. Looks like a move right along movie so pay attention. Thank you for Posting it.

GREAT, GREAT MYSTERY! And Alastair Sim's acting is like Charle's Laughton's .. and that is, off the charts! Those character actor's from yesteryear cannot ever be equaled, it just can't, it's impossible!!!!

A true British film, with all the drama, suspense and hints of dry humor making it an enchanting movie. If you really want a good laugh, turn on Closed Captions and see how they totally destroy the script!

I don't like these old mystery black and white movies, I Adore them simply adore them.

I totally agree with the comments below, Alastair sim and Trevor Howard are two of the very best actors ever, only a small few in present times come any where their quality in performance and interpretation of there characters . Check out Alastair sim's scrounge and Trevor's Howard's captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty ! Both films perfection ?👍10out of 10 !

What a fantastic performance by Alistair Sims here. Fascinating atmosphere of Brits coping during WWII bombardment. Thanks so much for uploading.
