The funniest thing is that this transformation was made irrelevant just *10 days* after the movie was released. For context, for anyone who doesn't know, DBZ Movie 4 came out on March 9th, 1991, and "Life or Death", Super Saiyan's debut chapter, was published on March *19th*, 1991.

According to the Dragon Ball wiki - "the False Super Saiyan transformation occurs when a Saiyan has the required physical power but lacks the required mental strife to transform into a Super Saiyan".

I don't know the source of this information, but I think it makes a lot of sense to me.

When transforming into ssj, Goku's eyes turn all white without the pupils for a second before he effectively crosses that power threshold and becones ssj. I feel like this transformation is Goku constantly edging on that threshold but never able to cross it.

I always saw this form as the first version of the "Super saiyan berserk" mode we get later. It's like you've tapped into the power of a super saiyan but it's not controlled and it's causing you to go primal.

This form was also closer to the Oozaru form in the sense that it made seemingly Goku mindless.

For some reason, starting with DBZ movie 2, Toei had the old DBZ movies take place further ahead than where the manga and anime were at the time they were written, which led to the movies ending up having a lot of inconsistencies in hindsight.

I feel like they could canonize it in future Dragon Ball media. The way it works is if you try to force yourself into SSJ, then you go into False SSJ. They could also rename it, "Forced Super Saiyan." (it could be 35x base)

In the lore of the show, no one actually knows what a super saiyan is. Super saiyan is a legend. Vegeta thought he was a super saiyan because he was royal but after each saiyan breaks through to a new level he may as well say "hey guys I know you're probably not going to believe it but I think this might be the legendary super saiyan"

False super saiyan is triggered by anger like regular super saiyan. But the only reason why its false is that he loses his other emotions while a succesful super saiyan keeps his emotions.
Same goes for ultra super saiyan which has lots of power but lacks the speed. Balance is key.

For anyone wondering, despite the re-naming of the form, it's still x50, the only problem as seen in the movie is that the user doesn't have control over it so it might seem weaker.

I have a theory that all three Super Saiyan forms have a 'false' version that you can obtain when you're close to the real thing but it has major drawbacks. This form is only available in a brief burst of barely controlled rage, nothing like the peaceful state Goku and Gohan perfected later. The mega-muscles form is clearly a false form of Super Saiyan 2 that limits your speed. And the cape of hair form used by Goku and Gotenks IS the false version of Super Saiyan 3, its a broken transformation that drains your chi too rapidly. There's a true Super Saiyan 3 form out there that no one has tapped into yet.
