Lyrics:
I wasn't starting yet, I didn't even think you were listening
I wasn't ready at all to say anything about anything interesting
It's a thing you have, you just don't know that you do it
You wait around in a conversation while I get in and start stumbling through it

I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud

Got to my feet feeling that I'd let you down
Wanted to say it slow and perfect but it all somehow got switched around
Something went off on its own, my dumb automatic chit chat
It's not what I meant to say at all, there's no way you can attach me to that

Got up to seize the day
With my head in my hands feeling strange
When all my thinking got mangled
And I caught myself talking myself off the ceiling
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud

Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?
Oh, where's the gravity gone?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving

You found the ache in my argument
You couldn't wait to get out of it
You found the slush in my sentiment
You made it sound so intelligent

You can stop and start an athlete's heart
How do I feel about it?
I would love to have nothing to do with it
I would like to move on and be through with it

I'll be over here lying near the ocean making ocean sounds
Let me know if you can come over and work the controls for a while

I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud

Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?
Oh, where's the gravity gone?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving

The phases of listening to a new song by The National. First listen: it’s okay but not as good as (fill in the blank.) 2nd listen: something clicks. 3rd listen: new favorite song that you can’t live without.

You know how it works: you enjoy this because you're happy and you need a little dose of nostalgic sadness, or you're sad and you need a little bit of joyful nostalgia. Or you just simply want to feel deeper. The National is always there.

Right when the music started I was once again reminded why I love The National. Sometimes I go months without listening to them because I try and check out other music but something always brings me back and I get hooked all over again. Hope to see them live if they decide to go on tour.

This is a huge classic already an hour after it dropped.

Beautiful. Berninger: “It became a song about having a hard time expressing yourself, and trying to connect with someone when the noise of the world is drowning out any potential for conversation.”

I don't think The National gets enough credit for how funny some of their lyrics are. Heard "I'll be over here lying near the ocean making ocean sounds" and the mental image instantly cracked me up. Love it!

Honestly one of the best songs I've ever heard- caught it on the radio. So glad I did. What a freakin gem. I hope it blows up.

This feels like a return to their style from the High Violet and Trouble Will Find me period in their discography, which was always my personal favorite era for The National

This was playing one of the last days that I left the hospital with my wife dying from cancer. She's gone. This is a bittersweet memory hearing this song.

I'm hesitant to say this but ... this is an instant classic National song.

"There's nothing stopping me now from saying all the painful parts out loud" This one line is just incredibly powerful, reigniting past pains and also quelling them with catharsis. Love it!

Like a warm blanket soothe my
Soul. My angst. My confusion. My inner self talk and observations. My regrets and missteps..thank you national…first heard these dudes living in a homeless shelter. My
Demons was the first song that connected being in rehab at that time and I would just listen alone in the workout room over and over. ❤

Nobody writes "sad dad songs" quite like The National... and I love each and every one of them.

One of those rare songs that becomes a soundtrack to your life. The first time you hear it and listen to the lyrics, it’s like the world stops for a moment. Pure artistry.

One of the very best bands producing music at the present time. Matt Berninger’s voice is mesmerizing.

I was born in 65, but in every decade, there are great bands, great singers. Creativite is a wonderful think. 😘
