I'm a firm believer that if you could travel back in time, you would travel basically to another timeline unrelated to the one that you left. Instead of traveling backwards and affecting yourself (of which there would now be two of you) you are traveling forward into an older timeline. Killing your grandfather would therefor eliminate the "you" of the new timeline, but not you who did the travelling.

If you tried time trabeling forward again, you would end up in a third timeline, not back to where you started.

I don’t think the universe keeps a log. If you were able to go back in time, do something that prevents your own birth, you still exist at that moment in the past. If you were to travel back to the future, you would probably still exist but you would never have been born and no one would know you. If you didn’t prevent your own birth and traveled back to a time before you originally traveled there would be two of you, if you didn’t interfere with yourself traveling back then eventually there would just be one of you if you did then there would be two. Edit: I take back the scenario of there only being one if allowing the original time travel. There would still be two. Whether through aging or returning again (post original travel, less there be three).

After creating another timeline, one of two things could happen for the universe to compensate:

A team of Time Wardens appear to make corrections to the timeline or
A supreme being that monitors time and space decides to destroy all alternative timelines.

This is the first time I heard the theory of time erasing the universe because of you killing someone important in your past. Honestly, I think the splitting timeline theory is the most likely outcome of time travel.

The traveler always remains unaffected when traveling back or forward as it is treated as a different timeline. However, if someone else travels to your timeline, then that will affect you.
