What is SAN? Storage Area Networking Explained

Fast, flexible, and fool proof: that’s SAN. For adding enterprise-grade storage capacity, storage area network is a tried and true method. Learn more about SAN, how it works and what it’s used for.

A SAN, or storage area network, makes storage available to multiple servers by interconnecting shared pools of storage devices. Organizations use SANs for distributed applications that need fast local network performance. They can also improve application performance because they enable IT administrators to offload storage functions and segregate networks.

And while SANs eliminate traditional storage bottlenecks and improve data security, they’re not a one-size-fits-all storage solution. SANs can be costly and complex, and require a specialized skillset to build and maintain. NAS, or network attached storage, is sometimes an alternative to SAN.

Does your company use SAN or NAS, or both? What method works best and why? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to hit the like button.

You should explain SAN topology, RAID on mass storage and export of LUNs, SW like multipath.

Got it. And thank you! Given the complexity of building and maintaining a SAN has NAS overtaken the use of SAN? And if not, are SANs beneficial in one type of environment over another?
