Today, we have a thrilling update on LeoLabs and their groundbreaking radar technology. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

LeoLabs has just announced plans to build a new type of radar under a $1.245 million AFWERX contract. This innovative radar, known as the S-band 2-D Direct Radiating Array, is set to revolutionize how we track rocket launches and spacecraft in very low Earth orbit, or VLEO. Dan Ceperley, the founder and COO of LeoLabs, shared some fascinating insights with SpaceNews.

LeoLabs already boasts a global network of radars that track spacecraft and debris in low-Earth orbit. Their network includes S-band radars shaped like snowboard halfpipes and flat UHF radars located in Texas and Alaska. However, this new Direct Radiating Array is a game-changer. Unlike the older S-band radars that have a couple of hundred antennas, the new array will feature hundreds to thousands of antennas!
