Very exhausting but also satisfying work. You learn a lot by doing this. Thanks for the inspiring work Chris!

Thanks Chris, I watched your video this morning and this afternoon I split a 16 inch 6 ft cherry trunk. worked just like you showed us. Pretty cool for an old dude to be wailing a sledge and get those results. See post on Unplugged Woodworkers Group on Facebook where I give you credit for showing the method.

Most informative...it tells me more than that chapter in Firefox vol. 1 does. Now all I need is a sledge, two or three wedges, & plenty of ibuprofen.

It sometimes can help to score the whole width of the cross section with a wedge to influence the splitting favourably and directly start with two wedges there.
Also there are good, heavy nylon hammers in the 4-6 pounds weight range (e.g. by Thor) that will not mushroom over metal wedges. It's probably easier to replace the nylon cap than restore the wedge.

Good stuff, Chris. Inspired by your adventures, I tried to split an elm log a while back. That didn't go so well. The interlocking grain kicked my keister! I'll try cherry, next. Keep the videos coming!

Great vid. Very informative! The only critic I have is that splitting logs on the dirt ground might soften your hammer blows due to a sponging effect of the dirt. But your the one out there splitting logs, so do it your way. )
