Anki Terminology: New Interval

In this tutorial, I explain the Anki setting called the "new interval". By default, the new interval is set to 0%. This means that if you fail a card, the interval completely starts over. Even if you haven't seen a card for a whole year (meaning the interval had grown very large), getting that card wrong will mean that all progress is lost. With default settings, it'll show up again the very next day and then start growing its interval from there.

However, if desired you could also set your new interval differently. I often set mine around 50%, meaning that if you fail a card with an interval of, say, a year, then once you get it correct again the new interval will be 6 months. This lets you retain some of your progress growing the interval of the card, and it can make sense for memory purposes because a card that you remembered enough times to grow the interval all the way to a whole year probably doesn't need to have its interval started completely over.
