So glad you heard something too.  I was hearing booms right before the quake (I'm maybe 3 hours south of you) and when the quake hit it was preceded by the biggest boom I had heard thus far.  Boom, rumble, sounded like a huge gust of air hit the east side of my house and then the shaking started.  So freaking scary.  I wish I had thought to get the sounds on camera, but they are so out of blue and last maybe 15-30 seconds.  :(

I think that's the gas underneath the ground escaping from a crack.

I live in So. Cali. all my life so I am no stranger to quakes. Just before an earthquake -within 24hrs. prior, the animals act strange and make sounds. Fish jump out of aquariums too prior to a quake. That sound you got might be the bugs in the trees. If they are large, like a cicada, they will make noise forewarning others. Plus, as the quake approaches, you can hear the ground rumbling seconds before it hits where you are.

I've heard that certain low frequency sound waves can precede earthquakes, and some sensitive people have reported dizziness and/or nausea.

sounds like a Natural Gas Pipe Line venting. I live near several pipelines and this happens on occasion. If indeed that is what it is...that would be a very good reason you felt your head spinning. If your close enough the noise alone can make you ill because of the volume. sometimes when they are inspecting the pipelines they have to vent the trapped gas under high pressure so they can insert a device that travels the pipe looking for cracks and weak spots.

I too felt dizzy as the earthquake hit. I was in New York when it happened. A few people I know got dizzy as well. Is the noise still happening? Can you record a new sample?

@CelesteStorywriter - Yeah..you're right. I heard this as well. Makes me wonder if they're attempting to clear it out? They do have a system for decontamination I believe. But nothing has been coming through clear of late. They've still got the one in Australia, though. What do you think for this one? Possibly fracking sounds?

@medini2 i am thinking the "truck brake" sounds were coming from underneath the ground...my house is sitting on a slab of basalt rock that the rock quarry has been blasting for years. so, i am accustomed to hearing blasts and all kinds of crap during the day, and usually they blast at just before 2pm...same time as the VA quake. the jack brake sound i heard occurred just before 10pm a few days ago. it is very concerning to me.

I am not sure about this one. But it might also be just those micro-lightnings very high caused by pole-shifting of Geomagnetic field.

Same thing happened here in Australia 3 days ago huge bright light, which lit up sky and 5 minutes later groaning, humming sounds next day Indonesia hit with Huge Earthquake!!!
The bright light was greenish color???

@Dannywjohnson How do you know about the fracking nearby in Virginia? i have read that eq in Va was felt by people from Canada to Florida and as far west as missouri... not the normal swarms of eq set off by fracking....

if we want fracking to stop, we can't fight it in the normal ways..with hearings, etc. i feel the state constitutions and the us constitution has been suspended w/o telling any of us. something is very very wrong....
