Will The New Fanatec CSL DD Wheel Be Strong Enough ? | Testing 5NM with the DD1

Following on from lots of comments about Fanatecs new CSL DD wheels 5Nm strength, I explain why raw power output is not necessarily the most important part of a FFB wheel.

He said make a cup of tea at 1:08 ... so I left to make a tea and returned at 17:30 and feel like I have learnt as much from this video as if I had sat through all of it... neat.

I'm optimistic for this for no other reason than it's going to force the market to standardise on DD and that benefits everybody. I think the Carbon Fibre thingy, the 8Nm upgrade & light rim I think this will perform really well.

was hoping you'd compare 5Nm vs 8Nm

I just bought a T300RS GT with the alcantara wheel and I just realized how strong the T300 actually is.

I think for the price, this is strong enough for me. My muscles have been atrophying since the start of this pandemic because Im still not allowed to go outside in my country.

Just wanted to add, the force you feel in your arms is proportional to the torque, but inversely proportional to the diameter of the rim. So if you get the new wheel with 8Nm, get the 270mm rim, it will be equivalent to 10Nm on a 330mm rim. Also, smaller and lighter wheel means faster changes of rotation direction.

I think it is, as long as they make the 5nm extra crisp

I'm glad you keep coming up with all the analogies for us to imagine. Smooth content!

OK, as requested by many in the comments, you have the capability to test 5nm versus 8nm. What do you think? Another video?? It would be outstanding information for those of us interested in a purchase....

Fanatec will make belt driven bases a thing of the past. in thier eco system. CSL DD is the replacement for the (CSL belt base. @6nm) And i can almost be sure that there will be a CSW DD at around the same price point or a lil more the the current CSWV2.5 ... this is my guess come back to this comment at a later date jamie

The genius is that by making the base 5nm upgradeable to 8nm with a booster power supply, you can draw even more people in. I'd probably opt for 8nm out of the gate but if you're coming from TM or G29 5nm should be plenty initially.

Is GM milking this annoucement? I feel milked. There is confused satisfaction.

people who are bothered about the max torque are the same people who worry about the dpi of a mouse, buy it and set it on 800 and forget about it

Temptation is to compare this to the DD1 and DD2 and ask what you're missing out on, but really it should be compared to the CSL-e wheel to see what you're getting above and beyond the belt-driven experience. I doubt many who bought a CSL Elite felt like it was underpowered; with this you're getting all the power of the CSL Elite, but with the benefits of a direct drive with no damping.

@GamerMuscleVideos I'm with you! I believe that the CSL DD will do better than DD1 to cope with the 5Nm as you tell on this video.
It's simple, the parts on the CSL DD will be smaller, lighter and with less resistance, so the internal inertia will be smaller.
The rotor and stator are about the same diameter (not length), it's like a DD1 cut in half, so it looks like better designed for the 5/8Nm of torque.

Nice video and analysis GM some very good points that you made here.

I've recently been getting more dissatisfied with the gritty feel of my current G29 wheel and liked the look of the CSL Elite, and its smoother belt-drive operation. I have an artificial right shoulder joint and a right wrist that hasn't healed properly after being fractured, so high torque wheels aren't for me. Then the CSL DD was announced and its 5Nm limit sounds perfect for my situation. I've always liked the idea of a DD wheel but didn't want to purchase one only to have to dial its torque down close to minimum.

Your video has helped me make up my mind to go for the CSL DD, so thanks.

Sold! I'm going to upgrade my CSW V2.0 workhorse to a CSL DD. I will probably buy the +3nm power update for 8nm total. iirc, my CSW has about 6 to 7 nm and I often run that at 80 - 100% so the change in actual strength should be manageable.

I made tea before starting the video and spat it out during the intro. You owe me a cuppa

5Nm should be more than enough for this price. Of course assuming rest of the "features" are well done.
It will be for sure much better for most of interested consumers - propably people upgrading from budget wheels like T150 or G25/27/29

it took me only 4 seconds to decide I was giving this a thumbs up! great intro! haha
