In Amsterdam, the football stadium of AJAX is completely off the grid by using used car batteries from the Nissan Leaf. They do football, but also big music events completely on their own power. They can even send the power back on the grid to power the rest if the city for a centain amount of time

"empowering his entire house "

"Only enough power to keep a tv set running for 12 hours "

100 Ah, per pack (and he upgraded in the meantime), he has 56 packs in one picture, and probably even more (and by different capacities), so it's not like he has only 100Ah capacity...he has around 133kw (calculated) capacity, more or less.

In other words: he can power a fully fledged house with all the consumption for 3 people and an electric car for half a month with fully charged batteries

I feel bad for when he needs to replace them because of lowered capacity from wear and tear

❌ 1 laptop to watch something for 12 hours
✅ 1000 color coordinated laptop batteries to watch TV for 12 hours

He has more than one setup.
His setup runs at 51.2v 104Ah that a little over 5.2Kwhrs.
I'm near the LA FIRES no power i have a ecoflow delta 2 max with 1 expansion battery this is apx 4kwhrs and it's enough to keep my TV, starlink, full unifi rack with UDM-PRO 48port poe switch 6x wifi 7 pro AP.
And my fridge is happy for a full day.
I have 800w of solar panels hooked up and the ecoflow smart generator.
The generator runs about 30-45mins perday if I can get 2 more solar panels, I can probably skip the generator entirely.
This includes the fact i used a toaster oven to cook a pizza 😆

Honestly, super cool it actually works but ngl it kind of looks like a fire trap in the making.

Extremely dangerous. Impossible to tell when each cell is close to failure due to age and when one single cell fails the entire array will ignite.

“Assembling into packs, *EACH* designed to hold around 100 amp hours” does he not have like 6 packs so 600A/h so enough to power a normal home if the solar can keep them charged

I have a feeling this is a fire hazard

For those who are going to do this, test each cell in a charger and if it don't hold a charge or it heats up alot you discard it.
But 'bad' laptop battery packs often have just one cell that is going bad.

If I had to power everything in my house with those batteries I would have barely enough energy to live, which is not a lot, but it's weird that is enough to do something

I would be *incredibly* nervous about the fire hazard of an old cell doing unexpected things if I tried to do this myself. Definitely a high-skill hobby project, and hopefully not something that affects the house insurance too much.

"trying to go off the grid" and recording every single step of that is intresting

If you have solar to supplement its definitely doable! When i first started messing around with batteries, i could get my house to run 5.5 hours on 100ah at 51.2 volts. That was leaving all my normal lights on, the furnace, and the well. Went way longer than i thought! I should be up to 3 or 4 hundred ah by the end of the month :)

I worked for a guy who ran the staff housing off a solar panel and a car battery. Frugal is a word.
