The Code: Story of Linux documentary (Multilingual) (HQ 50 fps)

This documentary was made by Hannu Puttonen (Born: 1960-06-21, Died: 2023-04-10).

I'm deeply grateful to Hannu Puttonen for making The Code, and helping to inspire me and many others around the world to start using Linux.

This is a new HQ rip that I made recently. This has not been compressed at all by me, but I've only deinterlaced it and upscaled it to 1080p. The reason I did the upscale is because the higher the resolution the higher the quality that YouTube will use for the video in general. Another difference from the old rip is that this rip has a framerate of 50 fps, not 25 fps. This preserves all the motion from the source video. Every step of the ripping process has been done using the lossless FFV1 codec, and the only lossy compression was done by YouTube's video encoder.

I added all the subtitles I could find online. And my own subtitles, which are: English and Swedish. Now there are 11 languages:

English, Simplified Chinese, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Rumanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish

If you want to help improve the subtitles, you can download the SRT files here:

If you want to help spread this video, you can make a new subtitle for your native language. If it's not one of the languages already available. In that case, you can just help edit (and improve/correct) the SRT file for that language.

Please use the SRT format for your subtitle and save it with UTF-8 (Unicode) character encoding.

I love this old documentary feeling this brings.

I just saw this documentary. I really enjoyed it. I loved the passion and beliefs of people that showed through. This is the kind of stuff that enamored me to computers and Linux in the first place. A sort of innocence, curiousity, and a deep desire to do something good, and doing the work for a vague something-something that is larger than us. So much that we would be willing to do this lovingly as a hobby. I really miss the days like this when we could share this together, even across distances and mindsets.

I think it's interesting that they mentioned mobile phones running Linux even though this was from 2001. Android hadn't been thought of yet. Cell phones were a thing (I had one) but they weren't ubiquitous nor were they even the kind of thing you'd imagine as a tiny computer. But even at the turn of the century, some people were already seeing the vision.
