I suppose vanos was added to bmw engines to increase fuel efficientcy.
However the fuel savings are erased to fix the vanos system.

I've got the same noise but only when the engine is cold, after a couple of seconds of driving the rattle noise disapears...

Hello, my M54 makes the same high pitched noise as yours on revs.
Is it linked to the vanos ?

I have a rattle that sounds similar, but not exactly the same. It sounds like it comes from more the intake manifold, but forums have stated that I can unplug the vanos solenoid and run it to see if the rattle disappears, and it won’t harm the engine at all. Is this true, and would it “go away” while unplugged? Or would it continue to rattle if it was the vanos? I have already swapped the Vanos over from another car so it seems very odd to me if it happens to be that, maybe it’s not getting enough oil through it.

Do these symptoms mean a Timing Chain Guide kit will be needed to fix the rattle? My car isn't as bad but I definitely hear it at cold start but at times quiets down after a drive. Using 5w-40 for the time being to see if it quiets down the engine a bit.

Thank you.
Good: Now I can safely say the rattling I hear is NOT my Vanos.
Bad: I'm pretty sure the shaft in my power steering pump has sheared off

Hi, i have the same sound, i repair the vanos and still sound. The only part that i don't remplaced is the steel rings of the inside of the vanos. Has anyone managed to fix it? The problem appeared when i change the oil 5w30 to 5w40!
